Linux 5.1-rc5 now available, the third part focuses on sound

Linux 5.1-rc5

These have been "boring" weeks when it comes to news about the Linux kernel. And it is that we have three or four versions without frights, but that this type of news is boring is good because it means that there are no problems. Yesterday, Linus Torvalds ad the launch of Linux 5.1-rc5, which will be the next major kernel release for any operating system that uses the penguin as a pet (albeit indirectly).

Linus says they have included kernel-wide changes, which is common for many of them and most are small changes. The sound driver is the one that has taken the most affection and 30% of the changes have to do with him. It seems like it was missing and many small changes have been added to it, but none of them were for any serious reason.

Linux 5.1-rc5: another quiet week

Another third of the changes have been dealt with in a group of drivers, such as GPU, RDMA, NVME or MMC and the last third of the changes have been made in architecture updates, tools and various kernel fixes, including networking, file system and security modules.

As you know, Linux 5.1 will be officially released on May 5, with the possibility of arriving on the 12th of the same month if they find an unexpected problem that they have to solve. Although it was already known and not expected, that makes it impossible for Ubuntu 19.04 to arrive, an operating system that will be released in three days, on April 18. When the time comes, if a user wants to update, they will have to do it manually or with simpler tools like Ukuu.

Linux 5.x has been available for over a month now and includes many enhancements that will fix many hardware incompatibilities. Have you already installed it?
