Linux 5.1-rc7, a "tiny" update preparing the official release

Linux 5.1-rc7

These weeks are being unusual in terms of information and releases, something that is so because we have spent the Easter and Easter holidays. The one who never rests is Linus Torvalds, something we already mentioned when we publish the release of v5.1-rc6 of the Linux kernel. At the time we said that the kernel was bigger than usual, but this week we have to say that Linux 5.1-rc7 is a "tiny" update.

So what posted Torvalds in his weekly magazine on the Linux kernel, where he tells us that the size of the previous version was normal due to the time of request delivery. Just under half of this week's patches are related to network changes, among which we have its kernel, its drivers and some netfilter autofilters. Everything is very small, with 30% of all patches already marked as "stable".

30% of Linux 5.1-rc7 is already stable

Torvalds says that 30% marked as stable makes it have the feeling that we are already in the final version, but not yet. The final version will arrive this Sunday, May 5, or that day is the one that is scheduled to launch. If they discover any major glitches, the release will be delayed for a week until May 12.

Torvalds usually publishes the information on the status of the Linux kernel on Sunday and this time it was no different. We have reminded that there should be a new update already on Thursday, so if they have not yet published anything about a bug that they have to correct, it seems that the launch will occur on the date indicated from the beginning.

Ubuntu and many operating systems updated over the last few weeks come with Linux kernel v5.0.x. The most up-to-date stable version is v5.0.11 and we can install this version manually or using tools like the one I always mention in this type of post, Ukuu. If we want to enjoy Linux 5.1 in Disco Dingo or earlier versions we will have to do it on our own. Will you or do you prefer to use the versions that Canonical provides you officially?
