Linux 5.17-rc7 is out after a quiet week. Stable release in seven days

Linux 5.17-rc7

In the past week we informed that Linux 6 rc5.17 arrived after a busy week, with several things to pay attention to. This week we have to say the opposite: Linus Torvalds He launched Linux 5.17-rc7 and there were no surprises. There are still some things to polish, but nothing to worry about. Much less worry a Finnish developer who would not get nervous or write code inside a house on fire.

There are a couple of things pending, and the father of Linux thinks that it's all under control. There were a lot of little changes last week, but they've all been fixed. Thus, the deadlines are being met, so, initially, there will not be an eighth Release Candidate. But don't relax too much, because in seven days something may appear that would force you to delay your plans. But if I had to bet, I would say that we will have a stable version next Sunday.

Linux 5.17 could arrive in a week

No surprises this week – we still have a couple of things to do, but everything seems under control. knock on wood Last week we saw the usual number of small fixes everywhere – with btrfs once again standing out. But once again it is not that there are many changes, it is that the rest is usually quite small. "The rest" in this case is mostly networking (drivers but also some kernel fixes), other drivers (gpu and input, with some noise elsewhere) and architecture updates (mostly devicetree and some kvm fixes, but also RISC-V and s390).

If everything goes according to plan, and everything seems to indicate that it will, Linux 5.17 will arrive in the form of a stable version on Winners will be announced in March. Ubuntu 22.04 will use Linux 5.15, so if you want to use Linux 5.17 you will have to do the manual installation or use a tool like Ubuntu Mainline Kernel Installer.
