Linux 5.2 reaches the end of its life cycle. Upgrade to Linux 5.3 now

Linux 5.2 ool

This summer, Linux Torvalds released the stable version of Linux 5.2. Personally, I think it was not as big of a release as Linux kernel v5.3, but like v5.1 it was more important than Linux 5.4 which will be released in late November / early December. The highlight of the next version is the security module Lockdown which will be disabled by default. In any case, this news is about the July version, a Linux 5.2 that has reached the end of its life cycle.

The end of life or EOL version (End Of Life) is the latest version to be released of a series. That latest installment has been v5.2.21 which was released yesterday. In the email they sent advising of the release, Greg Kroah-Hartman recommends that we update to version 5.3 of the Linux kernel, now that v5.3.1 has been released a long time ago (they are already on 5.3.6), which means that the latest version of Linux is ready for mass adoption.

Linux 5.2.21, the latest version in this series

From Greg's mail, it is striking that it says that «I am announcing the release of kernel 5.2.20 […]. Keep in mind that it will be the last kernel 5.2 to be released, it is now the end of its life cycle«, But if we enter The Linux Kernel Archive, the EOL version is the v5.2.21 mentioned above. In any case, be it 20 or 21, we are facing the last one, so we have to update.

It is necessary to update as long as the manual installation of the Linux kernel has been carried out. In general, it is the distribution that is in charge of updating the kernel, such as Canonical that updates the kernel of its operating system (it did it this morning) when it finds a bug to correct. I explain this because I do not recommend installing the kernel on our own unless our equipment is crashing in a way that we cannot support. If this is your case and you are on Linux 5.2, now is the time to update. You can download the latest version from this link. On the other hand, we can also use the Ukuu that you have in the related article.
