Linux 5.6-rc7, now available the last RC of a great release whose development has been very quiet

Linux 5.6-rc7

The kernel version currently in development will be a major release. It will include many important functions like the ones you can read in this article published a month and a half ago, so we might have thought that its development would be complete chaos. It was not like that: yesterday, Linus Torvalds He launched Linux 5.6-rc7 and even he has been surprised saying that although the world around us is going through strange times, at least the development of the kernel seems normal so far.

Torvalds again finds an explanation for what is happening: people are distracted by COVID-19. The first thing we can think of when reading these words is that if the developers are distracted, everything would be worse, right? But that seems not to be the case. The father of Linux refers to those who are testing the kernel version in development, that being distracted there is a possibility that there are bugs and they are not discovering them. This, God forbid, would mean that it would launch with many bugs that they should fix within the first few weeks.

Linux 5.6-rc7: calm in strange times

Nothing really stands out, everything is quite small. I'm going to be optimistic, and say it's because we're very well on our way to a normal quiet release, but obviously it may be partly because everyone is distracted by virus concerns. But I haven't seen anything that looks very concerning on the kernel side.

Torvalds says he hasn't seen anything worrisome in the kernel part, so taking that into account and the date we're in, a tragedy would have to happen for Linux 5.6 not to see its stable version released next Sunday. Winners will be announced in March.

This important version of the kernel, which we remember even includes a function that will keep the CPUs of our equipment cooler, will not be included in a Focal Fossa which has decided to stay on Linux 5.4 LTS. Whoever wants to use it must do the installation on their own.
