Linux 5.7-rc1 now available: everything normal despite Easter and COVID-19

Linux 5.7-rc1

After a blank week and two weeks after the latest stable versionLinus Torvalds launched Linux 5.7-rc1. The blank week is usual, since they were in the merge window or collecting requests / changes to add to the kernel. Therefore, this new Release Candidate has arrived just when it should, and has nothing to do with the confinement or the crisis that is causing COVID-19. In fact, the virus has been mentioned, but it seems to say that if someone thinks they will be harmed, they can ask for help and it will be offered.

Torvalds began his weekly mail by talking about Palm Sunday, more specifically the Finnish Easter dinner. And, although he is not religious, like many, he believes that certain traditions should be respected, even if only for the family component. Back to the kernel, ensure that everything is quite normal and that everything has gone smoother than it usually goes in a first Release Candidate.

Linux 5.7 is off to a good start, despite everything

Things seemed pretty normal, in fact I felt things were working better than they often do, with most of the large pull requests coming in the first week just the way I prefer. Yes, I had a fair number of hitches the second week as well, but a lot of them were smaller subsystems, or follow-ups, or fixes. Keeping people inside could help.

Linux 5.7 will be the next major release of the Linux kernel. If your development is within normality, the stable version will be released on May 31. If, on the contrary, it comes across a stone along the way, it will launch the 5.7th RC that it usually delivers to ensure that everything works correctly, in which case Linux 7 would arrive on Sunday, June XNUMX.
