Linux 5.8-rc3 is still great, but nothing particularly worrisome

Linuxx 5.8-rc3

The first RC of the Linux kernel version currently in development I arrive with a huge size. But, as usual, Linus Torvalds didn't seem overly concerned. The father of Linux explained it by saying that it is the version of the kernel that will receive the most modifications since it is being developed, ensuring that there will be changes that will occupy 20% of the total. Yesterday arrived Linux 5.8-rc3 And, although it is still believed that the final version will be important, the size follows a logical path.

So what has explained in the email you sent this week, where you say yes, Linux 5.8-rc3 is great, but you think there is nothing in particular to worry about. Torvalds and his calm tell us that everything is normal if we take into account that the next version of the Linux kernel is expected to be a major release, which makes you have other doubts, such as how long it will take to complete their development.

Linux 5.8 might need a longer development

Well, we had a great fusion window, and we have a pretty big rc3 here too. The lull period for rc2 is clearly over. That said, I don't think there's anything _ particularly_ scary around here, and the size of this rc is probably just a direct result of the fact that 5.8 is a great release. It's too early to say if this means we'll have a longer RC period as a result, I'll just have to keep an eye on how this is all progressing.

It is curious that Torvalds is already considering in the third RC that Linux 5.8 is going to have an eighth, something unusual that is usually raised a couple of weeks before the launch of the stable version. This just confirms that you have high expectations for this launch in early August, making it more than likely to be included in Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla coming in October.
