Linux 5.9-rc3 makes news again for not being news

Linux 5.9-rc3

Yesterday was Sunday and, among other things, that means we had a new Linux kernel Release Candidate. In this case, Linus Torvalds He launched Linux 5.9-rc3 and the news is that everything is still as calm as in previous weeks. The development of 5.9 is in contrast to that of 5.8, where up to 20% of the code was modified and where there was talk of problems or important changes every week.

This rc3 is smaller than the third Release Candidates they have had in recent releases. Where there has been more movement has been in the conversion of "failed" comments but, for everything else, it is the typical release in which architectures and drivers are updated. Come on, the news is that there is no news.

Linux 5.9 will come with news, but less prominent than Linux 5.8

A good number of small fixes all over the place, with a lot of fairly uniform noise spread due to fallhtough comment conversion. But although missed annotations are a Rather widespread background noise, we have the usual driver fixes all over the place (gpu, usb, others). And architecture updates (arm64 stands out with both kvm fixes and DT updates, but there are some x86 and powerpc changes as well).

Taking into account the timelines and different release dates, Linux 5.9 should arrive on october 4, the 11 if it requires a rc8. Therefore, it will not arrive in time to be included in the Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla that will be released on October 22. Users interested in enjoying it when the time comes, something that I personally never recommend because I prefer to use the version of the kernel that my distribution offers me, will have to perform the manual installation. Another option that we always "recommend" is to install the new kernel using the Ukuu tool, from which we can also do the "Downgrade" if we experience a problem.
