Few days ago lhe GNU / Linux distribution Linux Schools celebrated its 20th anniversary with which made available to the public a new version which was 6.0. This announcement was made on its main website in order to commemorate its anniversary and it was done through a statement by its developer.

Now just over 2 weeks after launch of Schools Linux 6.0, su developer released a new version which greatly improved the previous release and added several changes and bug fixes.

For those readers who are still unaware of this Linux distribution, I can tell you a little about it.

About Linux Schools

As the name implies, Schools Linux is a free Linux distribution whose main objective is educational institutions of Spain and other countries where Spanish is one of the spoken languages.

It is a GNU / Linux operating system that is based on the Bodhi Linux system which in turn is based on Ubuntu, Escuelas Linux is fully featured including a wide range of open source applicationsas well as a modern and attractive graphical desktop environment.

The operating system is distributed in two DVD ISO images Live that are perfectly suited to single layer DVDs or USB flash drives 8GB or higher (recommended).

There are two ISO images, one for each of the major hardware platforms, 32-bit and 64-bit.

The user must use the ISO image that corresponds to their computer architecture to boot the operating system, access the live environment, and eventually install the Linux distribution on the respective PC.

Linux schools it is a very light distribution. Using Moksha as a graphical interface makes resource consumption low and it allows its installation in practically any equipment with requirements as low as 512 MB in RAM and 50 GB in hard disk.

About the new version of Escuelas Linux 6.1

As was said at the beginning of the article, a new version of this Linux distribution was recently released and it was in a really short period of time, because just two weeks after the release of version 6.0, they renewed the distro and it is updated to its version 6.1

In an unusual move, this is the first time we've released an update just two weeks from a major version, in this case 6.0.

However, there were many improvements available after the release of our version 6.0, which we consider really essential to incorporate all these changes to our distribution now.

Schools Linux 6 includes office utilities LibreOffice 6.1.1, only Office 5.1 y Softmaker FreeOffice 2018, and the browsers Mozilla Firefox 62, Google Chrome 68, Chromium 68 and Vivaldi 1.15.

Also comes with Imagen editor GIMP 2.10.6, digital painting program Chalk 4.1, visual software development environment Live Code 9.0.1, Kdenlive 17:12 video editor, VLC Media Player 3.0.3.

As well as several other general-purpose applications, many in-house building tools, and a robust selection of educational applications, such as Gcompris, Geogebra, wxMaxima, PSPP and all KDE-Edu applications.

Version 6.0 included Mintstick, to create bootable USB from ISO images. Unfortunately, that application proved to be unreliable, as most of the tests on USB sticks processed with that program failed.

Now the change has been made and an application has been included that proved to be robust and reliable, Etcher, our new recommended tool for processing ISO images to USB sticks.

Schools Linux 6.1 "DNA release" is now the latest version of the system Linux-based operating system designed for educational purposes, introducing a more robust clipboard and Linux kernel 4.18.8.
