Little disappointment: Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa will use Linux 5.4

Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa with Linux 5.4

Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa will be an LTS version. What is a Long Term Support version? These are releases supported for 5 years in which, in addition, Canonical puts more meat on the grill at the same time that it tries to make the system well polished. At first, because it has already happened in other releases, it was thought that it would arrive with the Linux 5.5 kernel, but it is already practically confirmed that it will do so with Linux 5.4.

Why Linux 5.4? Well the developers say it's because Linux 5.4 It is also an LTS version, in this case of the kernel, but there is probably something that they do not tell us. The official version informs that Linux 5.4 will be supported by Linus Torvalds and his team until 2021 and Canonical prefers to stay in an older version that supports the official team than to have to do extra work for them that, it must be said, could be unnecessary.

Ubuntu 20.04 will miss interesting kernel functions

With regard to this, there are a few things to keep in mind. The first is that, in April, Ubuntu users will not be able to enjoy some Linux 5.5 features, kernel that offers better benchmarks than the previous version. In addition, we will not be able to enjoy another function, although this was not expected due to the deadlines, available in Linux 5.6 that will make our teams stay cooler.

The next thing we have to know is that what we will not be able to use in April 2020 we will be able to use in April 2021 or earlier, as long as we update the kernel manually. I do not recommend updating the Linux kernel on our own unless it is strictly necessary; I think it would be better to have some patience and wait for the release of an updated ISO that would match Ubuntu 20.04.2, version that would already include Linux 5.7 or 5.8.

We also have to remember that there are functions that Canonical adds directly, such as the support for WireGuard. With all this, what do you think Ubuntu 20.04 to stay on Linux 5.4?

But it is logical. Ubuntu LTS and the Kernel as well.

Ubuntu is a fossil. Almost nothing has changed. It is heavy, rough and not very adaptable. A brick I would say.

TNT, I started using windows since 1989 and I switched to Linux in 2006. Currently I have a computer with windows 10 and Ubuntu. Conclusion I've come to: windows is OS crap for many reasons, which is why all my work is done on Ubuntu.
