Lubuntu 18.10 will have LXQT as desktop by default

Still many users are enjoying and discovering the news of Ubuntu 18.04, but already many venture and talk about the next version of Ubuntu. Just yesterday we knew that Ubuntu 18.10 will be called Cosmic. And today we know that its official lighter flavor will change desktop by default.

That's right, Lubuntu project leader, Simon Quigley has confirmed the use of the new LXQT desktop in Lubuntu. So Lubuntu 18.10 will have LXQT and drop LXDE as well as the subversion called Lubuntu Next.LXQT is the same LXDE desktop but with QT libraries, which for some is an improvement in terms of performance and resource optimization. But this desktop is not ready yet and there is not even a stable version or first version. Perhaps this is why Lubuntu has taken so long to apply it to its distribution. The official announcement of the addition of LXQT to Lubuntu dates from the Ubuntu 15.10 release, but it was not until Ubuntu 17.10 that we received a full version of Lubuntu Next and two more versions have been necessary to permanently incorporate the desktop with QT libraries.

Lubuntu Next will cease to exist with Lubuntu 18.10

LXDE lovers and especially those who installed Lubuntu 18.04 They should not worry as they will continue to receive updates from the old desktop, but only regarding security issues and bugs that may appear. Files that refer to such a desktop, ie old LXDE, will have the Lubuntu classic reference.

Personally, I have not tried the Lxqt desktop, a desktop that is already used by popular distributions such as Fedora or Debian, but it is true that to date no one has complained about its operation or performance. But it is also true that no user has noticed the difference between Lxde and Lxqt, so it seems that the upcoming Lubuntu 18.10 will not attract much attention What do you think? Have you tried Lubuntu Next? Do you think there is a difference compared to Lubuntu 18.04?

I'm going to miss LXDE but hey, advancement is advancement (for the better). I have certain expectations for Lxqt, although if it doesn't meet them, plan B will be XFCE.
