Lubuntu will use Wayland but it won't be until 2020

The Lubuntu project leader continues to talk about the future of the official flavor. On this occasion, Simon Quigley spoke about the graphical server of the distribution. Lubuntu still uses XOrg as a graphical server rather than will change to the graphical server Wayland, which is being implemented in many distributions.

Wayland is the graphical server that Ubuntu has chosen for now, although it is not currently using it fully but is sharing use with X.Org. Lubuntu for its part has indicated that it will try to soon Wayland will be the graphical base of Lubuntu. But this “soon” will not be as soon as we expected. Lubuntu will not have Wayland until 2020, specifically in October 2020 with the launch of Lubuntu 20.10. This version will not only have Lxqt as the default desktop, but it will use Wayland in its entirety, freeing itself from XOrg.

In addition, Quigley has indicated that they are working on a solution for Nvidia GPUs that will make them work with Lubuntu without any problem due to the drivers, something interesting for users of the official flavor that use this hardware, which are not few and that is becoming a sour experience for novice users.

But so far we only have words and a roadmap of the distribution, nothing firm. By this I mean that two years ago it was said that Lubuntu was going to have Lxqt as its default desktop and we still cannot say that is true. The 2020 date could be related to the arrival date of Wayland to the Ubuntu LTS version, something that will happen sooner or later and hence Simon Quigley has confirmed the arrival of Wayland to Lubuntu. And despite all this I have to confess that it is appreciated that news of this official flavor comes out since that means that the project is active and that we will have support for the operating system.
