Communication and content creation, both social and cultural, is changing thanks to the internet. And is that most of the content that is created, is broadcast mainly on online platforms.

Although video is the most successful format currently, in Ubunlog We want to dedicate an article to another format that is still maintained with some success, as is the case of Podcast. Therefore, today we bring you an application, gPodder, with which you can manage your Podcasts directly through the app. Do you like the Podcast format? This is your article.

As we said, the name of the application is gPodder, and with it you can download your favorite audio or even video Podcasts, so that later you can listen to them directly on your computer. As a curiosity, you can access a great repository Podcasts that gPodder offers you. Of course, the Podcasts are in English.

The good news is that a couple of months ago it came out a new version of gPodder (3.9.0), which brought with it quite a few bugs corrected and many new features. It has also been removed source code that was no longer maintained. These are the most notable novelties:

  • Added Korean translation (I guess this is not the one that interests you the most)
  • Device synchronization only fails if free space can be determined.
  • Add Podcasts to Playlist right after downloading.
  • Set the "visibility" via the AppIndicator extension.
  • Support for WebUI, QML UI, and MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan has been removed.
  • The Flattr integration, which was not working, has been removed.
  • Redesigned windows.
  • Added new preference to separate tabs in video lists.
  • Fixed integration with Vimeo

Also, the N9 port will no longer be supported. Still, the supporting source code is still in the Git branch called "harmattan" in case you need it.

Installing gPodder

gPodder is by default in the official Ubuntu repositories. If we want to download it, just run in the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gpodder

Another way to install it would be through a rpm package that we can download from the gPodder website. If we go to the download page. We see that there is a .rpm of the latest version available for Linux. If we click on it, the download of a package called gpodder-3.9.0.rpm.

Once downloaded, we will need the help of another program to be able to install the .rpm package on our Ubuntu 16.04. The name of the program is Alien and we can install it by running:

sudo apt-get install alien

Once installed, we can install the gPodder rpm package. To do this, we go to the directory where we have previously downloaded it and, to install it, we execute:

sudo alien -i gpodder-3.9.0.rpm

Now you should be able to search and start gPodder without any problem. Easy right? We hope that from now on you can enjoy your podcasts in the most dynamic way possible. Until next time 🙂
