Meteo Qt allows you to check the weather from the tray

Weather Qt

Among the most downloaded applications in the different app stores, we always have one or more about meteorology. This can only mean one thing: we are interested in knowing what the weather will be like in the near future. There are also many websites that will let us know what the weather is going to do, but I think it is always worth having an application installed, as long as the option to check the weather is not by default in an operating system. Of course, in Linux we have many and very varied options for this task and Weather Qt It is a small application that we can access from the tray.

Meteo Qt is based on Python 3 and Qt 5. It is originally built to work on Qt-based desktops, such as KDE or LXQt, but it seems to work flawlessly on GTK-based desktops, either as a tray icon or as an AppIndicator. It has been tested without problems on various flavors of Ubuntu, such as the standard version, Kubuntu, and a few others. Here's what Meteo Qt can do.

Functions available in Meteo Qt

  • Use information from OpenWeatherMap.
  • The weather window shows a detailed forecast that includes wind speed and the percentage of the sky covered by clouds.
  • 6-day forecast that includes rain, wind, pressure, humidity and clouds.
  • Support for adding multiple cities.
  • Possibility to choose between degrees Celsius, Fahrenheit or Kelvin, as well as the update interval.
  • Configurable tray icon that allows us to modify the size and color of the font and display temperature, an icon or both at the same time.
  • Optional notifications when updating the weather.
  • Support for proxies.
  • Option to start automatically with the system.

What I don't like at all is that in order to use Meteo Qt we have to register in OpenWeatherMap (since here) to get a free personal API key. Once we enter our OpenWeatherMap account, we will home.openweathermap.org, we click on "API Keys", copy the key and paste it into the Meteo Qt settings. Keep in mind that the activation of the key can take up to 10 minutes.

How to install Meteo Qt on Ubuntu 16.04 or later

  1. We install this package .deb.
  2. Next, we update the repositories and install the software by opening a terminal and typing the following:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install meteo

If we do not want to install the repository, something recommended if we want to have the software always updated, we can install Meteo Qt by installing its .deb package, available from here. Have you already tried it? How about?
