Mir 1.0 will be available for Ubuntu 17.10

Canonical's graphical server continues its development. The famous MIR that was to replace the graphical server X.Org and Wayland, will finally be in Ubuntu 17.10. At least that's what project manager Alan Griffiths has indicated. The first stable version, that is, Mir 1.0, will be available in the next stable version of Ubuntu and it brings a lot of news, at least for users and system administrators. Mir will not be in this version as the default graphical server, but it will be present in the distribution and can be used as the default graphical server, after the pertinent changes.

Between What's new in Mir 1.0 is Wayland compatibility. This means that Mir will be able to run and create windows within clients using Wayland. In other words, from now on, the graphic servers of the future will talk to each other and will be able to communicate.

This is not something like the XMir or XWayland, that is, They are not Wayland libraries within Mir or vice versa, but they are communication protocols between servers and server-client that will optimize the operation of the distributions that use this type of graphic servers.

We can test this new version of Mir in our Ubuntu distribution, we don't have to wait for Ubuntu 17.10. To do this, we just have to open the terminal and write the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mir-team/staging
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install mir

After this, the latest version of Mir will be installed on our Ubuntu. We must remember that Mir is a stable version, but not the rest of the operating system supports this graphical server, so when installing this version our operating system may break. It must be taken into account if we want to use it or only if we want to experience the operation of this Canonical element.

Seeing is believing. Hopefully they can optimize it for computers that come with hybrid accelerators.
