Mixxx, a mixing console created with free DJ software

about mixxx

In the next article we are going to take a look at Mixxx. This is one free software application for disc jockeys that allows mixing. In principle it supports the audio formats ogg and mp3, but other formats can be played through plugins. Its use is very simple. It can be considered as a program that can be used by both newbies and advanced users. At the same time we will find it available for Gnu / Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.

When talking about DJ tools, it can be mentioned on the side of the proprietary software Virtual DJ and on the side of free software, I think the program is worth highlighting Mixxx. Both applications, at first glance, are very similar tools in terms of graphic appearance and also in terms of their usefulness. They both serve the same main purpose which is to mix.

Finally, something that cannot go unnoticed is that if we want to use the software legally, Virtual DJ is free only for a short period of time. Later, if we want to continue using it, we have to pay for a license that is very expensive. Conversely, Mixxx which is totally free software. This simple difference will provide us with all the advantages and benefits over proprietary software. Unlike Virtual DJ, the Mixxx program is software multi platform, that is to say that it is available for different operating systems such as those that I have already indicated lines above.

Mixx has everything you need to start doing dj mixes in an environment suitable for it. Either to DJ the next party or if we need a program for broadcasting. Mixx has what it takes to do it right.

Mixxx General Features

This program provides us with a powerful mixing engine. Mixxx has a mixing engine that includes support for MP3, M4A / AAC, OGG, FLAC, and WAV audio, adjustable EQ shelves, vinyl timecode control, recording, and broadcasting.

We're going to be able to add sparkle to our mix with reverb, echo, and much more. We will also be able to assign a quick effect to the filter knob of the controller to add color to our sound.

In case of having a bad public address system in the room, we will be able to use the built-in master equalizer to soften the sound.

It will allow us integration with iTunes. All iTunes playlists and songs will automatically be ready to go to the next live performance.

mix two tracks with mixxx

This application will offer us support as a DJ. More than 85 MIDI controllers and various HID controllers. Mixxx is going to give us comprehensive hardware control for our mixes.

We will be able instantly sync the tempo of songs for seamless beat mixing.

We will also be able to create a playlist quickly. We can let the show take command of the performance.

Every year, a community of DJs, programmers, and artists contribute dozens of new features to Mixxx.

Because Mixxx is open source, anyone can remix or add new features to it. Anyone can get involved with Mixxx helping with translations or working on any of the other tasks for which help is always needed. The source code of the application can be found on its page GitHub.

Install Mixx on Ubuntu

To install it on Ubuntu or distributions derived from it such as ElemantaryOS, Linux Mint and others like that, we must add the official repository. For this we will write the following commands in our terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mixxx/mixxx && sudo apt update && sudo apt install mixxx

Uninstall Mixxx

If we are not interested or do not finish convincing this program, it will be possible to eliminate it from our Ubuntu in a simple way. We'll get rid of the repository first and end up removing the software from our system. To do all this, we open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and type the following:

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:mixxx/mixxx && sudo apt remove mixxx

Those who need it, can read more about this project or know more about all the characteristics of this in the project website.

Without belittling this article. You can tell that both Mixxx, TransitionsDj, are made with open source. For those who do not understand about these matters, it will seem like a pass, but nothing is further from the truth. They are for applications like these and many others for which I cannot definitively abandon windows.
