Monitor Plus: Mozilla's new data privacy service

Monitor Plus

Monitor Plus, is an extension of Mozilla Monitor

On the occasion of Safer Internet Day, Mozilla released via a blog post the launch of a new service subscription that aims to help people protect their personal and confidential information from data broker websites.

Mozilla Monitor, previously known as Firefox Monitor, has taken a step forward in protecting online privacy, as the service will now be known as Monitor Plus and promises to be an ally in the fight against search sites and data brokers, who often handle our information unethically.

What is Monitor Plus?

Monitor Plus is Mozilla Monitor's new paid subscription service offering, a free service that notifies users when their data has been compromised in a data breach. Monitor Plus' new offering seeks to address growing concerns about online privacy and provide users with a comprehensive solution to protect their personal information.

Nowadays, it's easy to find data about someone online. There are numerous websites dedicated to collecting and selling personal information, from criminal records to financial details. The most worrying thing is that, although there are many ways to request the removal of our data from these sites, the process is complex, tedious and time-consuming.

“When we launched Monitor, our goal was to help people discover where their personal information might have been exposed. Now, with Monitor Plus, we will help people recover their exposed data from data broker sites trying to sell it,” said Tony Amaral-Cinotto, product manager for Mozilla Monitor at Mozilla. “Our long-standing commitment to putting people's needs first and our simple step-by-step process make Monitor Plus unique.

This is where this Monitor Plus comes into play, since Mozilla has designed this service to offer a practical and effective solution to this problem. Monitor Plus offers users the ability to locate and remove their personal information from data broker websites, providing a proactive solution to protect sensitive data online.

In collaboration with Onerep, Mozilla Monitor Plus scans user data and initiates deletion requests, which are generally processed within 7 to 14 days. Although not all data can be deleted, Mozilla commits to persistent efforts and guides Plus members on deleting personal data.

How It Works

The operation of the free Mozilla Monitor and Monitor Plus service is similar, and thatUsers provide Mozilla with their first and last name, current city and state, date of birth, and email to initiate a scan (information that Mozilla is committed to keeping encrypted and that its handling follows Mozilla's privacy policy).

The analysis reveals where personal information is exposed, including through data breaches and sites and this is where the difference between the free service versus Monitor Plus comes in, since as mentioned in the free service it only shows you the sites where Your exposed data has been found and the user is the one who must be responsible for carrying out the task of requesting deletion.

while for the case of Monitor Plus, as we already mentioned, Mozilla takes care of everything and performing scans monthly to ensure that users' personal information is not present on data broker sites. This helps prevent continued data exposure and provides an additional layer of online security.

Finally, if you want to know more about the service, you should know that it is offered through an annual subscription of $8.99 per month and is currently only available for users in the US, but Mozilla intends to extend the service to more countries.
