More tips on post-installation of Ubuntu

Ubuntu is highly customizable

In the article Previously we had published some suggestions to improve the most recent version of the Canonical distribution. In this post there are more tips on post-installation of Ubuntu.

Linux distributions are by definition highly configurable. Those of us who have been using them for years know some tricks that can be useful for those who are just starting out. Here are some of them.

More tips on post-installation of Ubuntu

Install the Synaptic package manager

Henry Ford is credited with saying "We're going to give people the car they want as long as they want it black and with four doors." Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical, is determined that users install programs in the Snap package format. Maybe that's why, The application store does not show programs packaged in DEB format, which are usually the majority.

Although it is possible to install them from the repositories manually, To find them, install or uninstall them, it is more useful to use a package manager with a graphical interface. For that we are going to turn to an old friend of veteran Ubuntu users: the Synaptic package manager.

Although it is not as visually beautiful as the application stores that we have become accustomed to using in recent years, It is very useful for working with applications in DEB format.

The first thing we have to do is install the program with
sudo apt install synaptic
Once we install it we can search for the application on the dashboard and start it. It will ask us for the administrator user password.

In the left column of the package manager we can select the classification of the programs. This is done by:

  • Sections: What the program does.
  • Status: Programs are classified by the status of their installation.
  • Origin: Where you get the package to install.
  • Search filters.
  • Results of previously carried out searches.
  • Architecture: What type of equipment the programs are compatible with.

In the top menu we have access to functions to activate or deactivate the repositories and ask you to tell us which programs are ready to update. I'm not going to talk about them because Ubuntu has specific applications for that and what interests us here is the installation of packages in DEB format.

To install a program with the Synaptic package manager we do the following:

  1. Find the program you want to install.
  2. Place the pointer over the name of the program and by right-clicking on Mark to install.
  3. It will show you a list of additional programs that are needed for your application to work. Click on Mark.
  4. In the top menu click on Apply, click on Apply again in the window that opens.
  5. If you want to uninstall a program, repeat the process but selecting Mark to uninstall.

Online accounts

In the old days, when we had to work with a file on more than one operating system we either copied it from Ubuntu to the Windows partition or stored it on an external device in FAT or NTFS format.

With the appearance of mobile devices, many chose to use cloud storage services to be able to access those files anywhere, The problem is that usually this involves downloading the document and uploading it again.

Luckily, Ubuntu has options so that these cloud services act as if they were just another partition and you can see them from the file explorer.

The options available are:

  • Google Drive
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Next Cloud.

Nextcloud is a self-hosted cloud storage service so you must have it mounted on a server to use it.

For the 3 services the procedure is as follows.

  1. Go to the right side of the top bar and click on one of the 3 icons
  2. In the small window that opens, click on the gear wheel.
  3. In the window that opens, look for Online Accounts in the right menu.
  4. Choose the type of account between Google, Microsoft 365 and Nextcloud.
  5. In the case of Google, it will ask you to press the button to open the browser. You just have to enter your username and password and follow the instructions.
  6. In the case of Microsoft 365, do not complete any information, press the button to open the browser and complete your username and password and click Continue.
  7. With Nextcloud you will have to complete the information it asks for.

Now you can open the file explorer and find the access with your account name in the side tab.
