Mozilla Thunderbird, the next victim in the Ubuntu desktop change

Although many see the arrival of Gnome as the default desktop in Ubuntu 18.04 with hope, the truth is that this change is having more and more detractors. Now, Ubuntu has announced that Ubuntu 17.10 will not have an email client, at least it won't have it installed by default.

Thus, users will have to install Mozilla Thunderbird if they want to use Mozilla's mail client. A change that many warn is due to the change of desktop, a desktop that already has an email client under its belt.

Mozilla Thunderbird is an email client that came to Ubuntu after leaving Evolution and months before Unity will arrive as the main desktop. Thus, Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox became programs that made up for the absence of Unity.

Mozilla Thunderbird will no longer be installed in Ubuntu 17.10 but we can install it ourselves

Gnome developers warn that the absence is normal as Gnome already has an email application, but so far Ubuntu has not said anything about Evolution but simply will not install any email clients, leaving the user to choose their email client.

Ubuntu 18.04 will possibly have Evolution as an email client but of course Ubuntu 17.10, the next stable version, will not have an email client, but alternative programs such as Evolution will be available in its official repositories. Geary or Mozilla Thunderbird.

I personally believe that the email client as well as other programs should be left to the user to choose on the installation screen. However, I do not doubt that this elimination is due to the change of desktop and to clean or remove as many dependencies as possible that such absences will have, then do not forget that Ubuntu 18.04 will be an LTS version and not a normal version. However What email client do you want?

I never supported Evolution, the first thing I always did was install Thunderbird, anyway most people use the Gmail or Yahoo web interface so it doesn't change too much

As long as it's in the Repository to install, no problem. Thunderbird gave me excellent results and I plan to continue using it.

Well, you install it and that's it. Where is the problem?

It is better to let them choose

Thunderbird was very late, it urgently needs a change, other programs have left it far behind, for example Kontact from KDE. It lacks practical functions and modernize the interface.

This program has become very obsolete, they should update its interface and improve other things.

There is not much to choose from in any case, all mail managers lack aesthetics and functionalities.

I like Thunderbird. Evolution was huge and heavy.

I agree, as much as I loved Thunderbird and used it since version 0.6 for many years, today it is one of the packages that I uninstall in each installation

Geary Mail, the GNOME email, is simple and easy to set up. GNOME already has the calendar application and both are perfectly synchronized with gmail (among others), therefore it is a bit "absurd" to have an email like Evolution or Thunderbird that, in addition to email, are an agenda.

I haven't used a desktop email client for years

Me with Geary more than paid. Now if Thunderbird changed its interface to a little more minimalist, I would switch to Thunderbird.

Thunderbird is complete and with a customizable interface, if I had an assistant that would allow you to easily choose the style (detailed, minimalist, ...) it would win more sympathy.
