mtPaint, graphic editor for light drawing in our Ubuntu

about mtpaint

In the next article we are going to take a look at the mtPaint graphical editor. East a free painting program It has been designed and developed for creating icons, pixel-based artworks, as well as for manipulating digital photos. It was developed in 2004 by British Mark Tyler and is currently maintained by Dmitry Groshev

mtPaint is a lightweight drawing program for Windows and Gnu / Linux. The program can be used to create drawings and edit photos. It uses GTK 1 and 2, and is written in the C programming language. Due to its small size, it is suitable for working in older equipment and less powerful.

mtPaint is a painting program with which we can edit 24-bit RGB images. It will also offer us basic painting tools and an image manipulation palette so that we can develop our projects. When we use the program, we will discover that the main file format is PNG. We can also handle JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, TGA, XPM and XBM files.

Before proceeding to install mtPaint In Ubuntu, let's take a quick look at its features.

Features of the mtPaint graphical editor

Its features include that it comes with image channels: Alpha, Selection, as well as Mask. It will also offer us the ability to use to create animations moving layers, or changing palettes, as well as animated GIFs.

Among its features to work with images, it must be said that it can transform the image gamma, brightness, contrast, saturation, tone, posterize from a single dialog, as well as preview the results of changes in real time. It will also allow us to change the size and scale of the canvas, enlarging or reducing, using various filter methods.

mtPaint also provides users with tools to blend pixels, fill, draw straight lines, erase, clone, paste text, draw / fill rectangles / ellipses.

Due to its limitations in memory use, the program will limit the memory available to undo images. It will allow us up to 1000 undo steps. We can have up to 12 images saved on the clipboard.

In addition, it should be noted that it allows us to activate or deactivate the toolbars by pressing a button. It will also allow us a horizontal or vertical split view mode. For a better job, it will also offer us the pixel grid to be able to orient us when we are using high zoom levels. The zoom levels with which we can work are between 10% and 2000%.

Continuing the characteristics that will allow us to work more comfortably, we can move the mouse pointer with exact precision with the arrow keys. At the same time it will also provide us with a large number of keys for direct access that we can use to improve productivity.

These are just some of the features of mtPaint. You can see all its characteristics in the site of the application.

Install graphical editor mtPaint on Ubuntu 17.04 and later

To install on Ubuntu 17.04, we first install the dependencies required to install mtpaint. The first step will be to install gdebi (if you do not have it installed yet, if so, skip this step), then we will continue downloading the file to comply with the dependencies and we will finish installing the newly downloaded package. To do all this, we open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write in it:

sudo apt install gdebi

wget https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/libopenjpeg5_1.5.2-3.1_amd64.deb

sudo gdebi libopenjpeg5_1.5.2-3.1_amd64.deb

At this point, it's time to add the mtpaint repo, update our list of available software, and install mtPaint. We will do all this as usual from the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T).

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/mtpaint

sudo apt update && sudo apt install mtpaint

Uninstall mtPaint from Ubuntu

Eliminating this program from our Ubuntu system is, as always, very simple. We open the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write in it.

sudo apt remove mtpaint && sudo apt autoremove

To get rid of the repository as well, in the same terminal we will write the following.

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:webupd8team/mtpaint
