MyPaint 2.0 introduces such important changes that they have decided to jump from the software v1.3

MyPaint 2.0

For Windows users there is practically no debate: to make basic image edits they pull Paint. Software has practically been around for a long time on Microsoft systems since they started with "windows." Where there can be more debate is in other operating systems, such as those based on Linux, because we have many more options, some of them trying to be a clone of the famous Paint. He who does not try to be a clone and has his own personality is the protagonist of this article, which has recently been released MyPaint 2.0.

The previous version was v1.3 of the software, so many of us may wonder "Why such a big leap?" Its developers explain it in the release note: MyPaint 2.0 adds a new layering mode, uses a different composition method and they have made changes to the brush parameters, which means that we can create files in 2.0 that will not be compatible with previous versions.

Highlights of MyPaint 2.0

  • Linear composition and spectral mixture (pigment).
  • Layer views.
  • Brush strokes depend on the rotation of the view and the zoom of the view.
  • Additional symmetry modes: vertical, vertical + horizontal, rotational, snowflake.
  • Expanded flood fill functionality: scroll, plume, gap detection and more.
  • New brush settings: offsets, grid map, additional smudge settings, posterization, pigment.
  • New brush inputs: barrel rotation, base radius, zoom level, x / y grid map, 360 direction, angle of attack.

Interested users can download the AppImage of MyPaint 2.0 since this link. Currently it is the only option we have to test the software, because, although it is available in a package Flatpak, it has not been updated yet. The version of the official repositories is still stuck at MyPaint v1.2.x.

If you try the new version, feel free to leave your experiences in the comments.
