Today November 5, sad news for Ubuntu users has arrived. One of the official Ubuntu flavors will stop developing as directed by the development team. We refer to mythbuntu, the official flavor that is destined for the multimedia world and above all for MythTV.
The official flavor I was using Ubuntu and Xfce as a base to build this official flavor, but it makes versions that arrive late or do not release a version as in this latest release. For this reason, the team may have decided to discontinue the distribution and stop supporting it.
But this does not mean that MythTV is no longer on Ubuntu, far from it. While mythbuntu-desktop will disappear from Ubuntu repositories, other packages will be kept and A PPA repository has been enabled so that users can install MythTV on top of Xubuntu, thus the result will be similar to Mythbuntu but saving efforts.
Mythbuntu will follow through a repository and MythTV
To have the latest version of Ubuntu and MythTV we only have to add the mentioned repositories to Xubuntu 16.10. At least that's how it is stated in the official statement issued by the Mythbuntu team. Personally, I think the best option is to opt for a flavor like Xubuntu or any other, Ubuntu is even worth it and install the programs we need or want.
Outside of this, the only option that I understand justified to switch to a flavor is desktop preference. Thus, if we do not like Unity, we can choose Kubuntu, Ubuntu Gnome, Xubuntu or Lubuntu, but outside of these, it makes little sense to create an official flavor based on a certain program. And it seems the Mythbuntu team has gotten to know it first hand.
In any case, let's hope this helps Xubuntu and also to improve the MythTV software, arguments that would justify this disappearance. Do not you think?
Very good. That they focus on really important flavors.
