This week in GNOME

The articles of This Week in GNOME they are getting longer and longer. This can only be explained in two ways: either the project is searching and finding more to explain, or the community is creating more applications for one of the most widely used desktops in the Linux world. If we pay attention to what was published in the last article, one may think that it is the latter, since there are several applications that have just arrived.

For example, this week an application called Toolbox has arrived on Flathub, which is used to convert code, among other things, and Chromatic, a tuner for musical instruments. The News list is what you have below.

This week in GNOME

  • The image decryption code has finally arrived in Loupe, and this is a first step to include other features in the future, such as support for color profiles or animated images. Among the rest of the news:
    • Fixed various memory leaks.
    • Re-made scrollwheel logic to support high-resolution scrollwheels.
    • Made some gestures work correctly on touch screens.
    • Many more bug fixes and tweaks prepared.
    • The drag and drop feature now incorporates a preview image that provides more contrast to the content behind it.

  • Workbench now has 11 new GNOME platform demos and examples, with more on the way.

  • Share Preview now has the new "logs" function, with which the application will give better information about errors, missing metadata and limits set by social platforms such as image sizes.

  • Pika Backup has received several improvements, such as that it now uses the new background state for the app that will be available in GNOME 44. Among the other new features, the following stand out:
    • Patch for compact not running after pruning.
    • Fixed a possible crash when deleting files.
    • Fix for fake “Pika Backup has crashed.
    • Changed secret service error messages to include specific instructions on how to resolve the issue.
    • Change to explain creating checkpoints when aborting backups.
    • Change to restart backup after SSH connection times out.
    • Changed reconnection to be abortable and count seconds remaining.
    • Added the ability to answer questions from the borg process.

  • Now available Toolbox, which they say that if you're tired of going to random web pages to convert or just do checks while writing code, you can give it a try. It includes encoders and decoders, text formatters for various languages, image converters, text and hash generators, and much more. Available in Flatub.
  • Also available now is owlkettle 2.2.0, a GTK-based declarative user interface framework. Owlkettle is a library for the Nim programming language. In this release they have focused mainly on documentation.

  • nautilus-code has received translation support and is now available in Hungarian and Italian.
  • This week has also arrived chromatic, a simple instrument tuner written in Rust.

  • telegrand has received many news:
    • Added support for archive messages, GIF messages, more event-type messages, and viewing responses to messages.
    • Added the ability to edit and reply to messages.
    • Added a Christmas easter egg animation (they were late).
    • Added markdown support for composing messages.
    • Added more information to the chat info window, such as group description, usernames, and phone number.
    • Added a contact window to view saved contacts.
    • Improved the chat view for channels, adding a mute/unmute button.
    • Improved the style of the chat view.
    • Huge performance improvements in chat view scrolling.
    • Groundwork for future support of chat folders and archived chats.

Telegrand in GNOME

  • Flare 0.7.0-beta.1 (unofficial Signal client) has arrived without major new features, but it has updated many dependencies that will allow for more changes in the future.
  • Blurble, a word guessing game, is now close to version 1.0.0:
    • Keyboard navigation has been improved. The currently active cell is highlighted and the user interface can be navigated with the Tab key.
    • Keyboard buttons are now colored as well. For better gameplay now the keyboard buttons are also colored based on if and where the character is in the word.
    • The app has been redesigned. Added a welcome page, help, and nicer information about game results.

Bubble 1.1.0

  • Pano extension has been updated:
    • Compatibility with Gnome Shell 44.
    • It is now possible to mark items as favourites.
    • New type of Emoji.
    • Many customization options have been added (Element Styles, Pano Height…).
    • Links can now be opened in the default browser.
    • History can be filtered based on the type of item.
    • Content-based notifications.
    • Lots of navigation improvements.

Pano

  • The download count extension is now available.
