The new version of the xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.0 drivers arrives

AMD Radeon

The new version of the free driver X.org 86-video-amdgpu has already been released in its latest version 19.0.0, which is a driver adapted to run on top of an integrated part of the Linux kernel AMDGPU module that also serves as the foundation for the new AMDGPU-PRO hybrid drivers.

The xf86-video-amdgpu driver It is designed for use with GPU families such as Tonga, Carrizo, Iceland, Fiji, and Stoney.

In this new release of the xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.0 driver We can highlight that the new version adds support for the FreeSync adaptive synchronization technology (VESA Adaptive-Sync).

Thanks to this, you can adjust the information refresh rate on the monitor screen to ensure minimal response time, smooth output, and no interruptions during games and videos.

FreeSync also allows you to reduce power consumption by reducing the intensity of the update when the image on the screen does not change.

Previously, AMD offered FreeSync support through the hybrid driver package with its DKMS module in Radeon Software. However, now it comes by default if you are on Linux 5.0.

To use FreeSync, you must use the Linux kernel 5.0 amdgpu module and the Mesa 19.0 radeonsi driver.
On the other hand also, it can be noted that this new version also adds support in framebuffers (scan buffer) of the DCC (Delta Color Compression) color packaging mechanism.

The quality of the "TearFree" mode, which protects the GPUs, has been improved. In multi-monitor setups in the style of Zaphod added the ability to connect up to 6 output devices to the GPU.

How to install the xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.0 driver?

For those who are interested in being able to install this new version of the driver they should first know if the driver is compatible with their GPU, since older GPUs that cannot work with the amdgpu module is excluded from the driver codebase.

Also, that as mentioned This new version of the driver requires Linux Kernel 5.0 to work properly.

To install this new version of Kernel 5.0 on your system, you can consult the next post en where we tell you how to carry out the process.

Now to install this new version of the driver xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.0 we will have to download this.

Since at the moment in the official Ubuntu repositories they have not updated the driver and this may take a few days.

Also in the third-party repositories the update has not been carried out. But at the end of the article I leave you a repository in case you want to wait and avoid compiling.

So that we are going to open a terminal in our system with Ctrl + Alt + T and in it we are going to type the following command:

wget https://xorg.freedesktop.org/archive/individual/driver/xf86-video-amdgpu-19.0.0.tar.bz2

Done this now we are going to unzip the downloaded package with the following command:

tar -xjvf xf86-video-amdgpu-19.0.0.tar.bz2

Having already unzipped the file we have to enter the directory that was created, we do this in the terminal with:

cd xf86-video-amdgpu-19.0.0

Now we are inside the folder, we can check the existence of the necessary files for compilation and installation by typing a:

ls

We will see something similar to what is in the following image.

Controller

Now We are going to compile the controller by executing the following command in the terminal:

sudo ./configure

This will take a while. At the end now we must type in the terminal this:

make

In the same way, the previous command will take a bit of trouble, so you must be patient. Now to finish if everything turned out well and without problems.
We can install the compiled driver by typing the following:

sudo make install

And ready.

Finally, before we finish, as I promised here is a third-party repository that you can add to your system for as soon as the person who maintains it updates the open controller, the notification of its existence will appear.

This is added by typing the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:paulo-miguel-dias/mesa
sudo apt-get update
