Skype for Linux 1.6 now available; still no video call support

Skype for Ubuntu

Since Microsoft decided to "kill" its Messenger to give priority to Skype, the platform it bought at the time, users have not agreed on which is the best messaging service. The most used is WhatsApp, but it is a service that is linked to our phone number, so it is far from perfect. In any case, this post is about Skype for Linux 1.6, the new version that is already available although it is in the Alpha phase

The new version comes with changes such as the new ability to paste files into chats from the clipboard, settings for emoticons, a correction when quoting messages, the ability to click on the tray icon to open the application, possibility of unpin Favorites from Recent Conversations and internal enhancements. But this new version arrives without something long awaited and necessary in any major messaging app worth its salt.

Skype for Linux reaches version 1.6 Alpha

The novelty that is expected but has not yet arrived is one of the most important of Skype: the video calls. And I think that since I've known Skype, whenever I've seen it in any image or video, which can even appear in movies and series, what I see is a full-screen video call, so this absence in the new version is surprising for Linux.

If you want to install the new version, you can download the .deb package by clicking on the following image. Is valid from Ubuntu 14.04 to the latest versions, which means that it should not give problems if the version you are using is one of the Daily Builds of Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak. As we always say, if you decide to install and try this new version, do not hesitate to leave your experiences in the comments.

I do not understand the non-compatibility with video calls when I have been doing them since debian for a long time

I have installed it recently and I also make video calls. Can you specify what it refers to?

From what it indicates on the download page, it seems that group video calls and calls to phone numbers are not implemented.

        Greetings.

I do not quite understand it either, in my linux mint debian edition I have installed skype version 4.3 for linux, at least that's what it says when I start it, and there is also skype web, which I don't know if it will have the functions that it is supposed to be missing to 1.6 but anyway for those who want to try it.
