Obuntu, the Ubuntu for eReaders

obuntu

Throughout these months and almost since Ubuntu was born, there has been talk about the different versions and the various flavors that exist of Ubuntu. Versions for PCs, for laptops, for netbooks, for smartphones and tablets, for PCs with few resources, for educational computers, etc ... Endless versions, but we had never talked about Obuntu, a very special version, since it is the only one (that at least we know) that is focused on eReaders, if ebook readers with electronic ink screen, those created by large companies such as Amazon, Kobo Books or Google. Well, there is also a version of Ubuntu for them, although at the moment it is not official.

Obuntu is an almost personal development of using Ubuntu on a very specific eReader, the Onyx Boox M92, an eReader from a Russian company that distributes its eReaders all over the world. If you see the video or some of its images, the eReader will surely sound to you and it is that in Spain it is distributed under the name of Tagus Magno, they can be found in the large book stores in Spain such as La Casa del Libro or El Corte Inglés .

Obuntu is a distribution specialized in eReaders and for eReaders

Obuntu is a year old and is giving a lot of satisfaction. Although Obuntu does not give you a complete Ubuntu interface, it is based on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and has great modifications so that Ubuntu can work without any problem on an 800 mhz processor with 256 mb of ram. In addition, Obuntu has the benefits of a distribution, that is, it already comes with installed software such as Caliber, so we can manage our own eReader without having to go to a PC, something very practical even if you believe it.

If you have an ebook reader similar to this or this same model, here you have the forum link where its creator is working and publishing the material. The installation system is extremely simple, especially compared to the one used by other developers to install Debian on other eReaders. Still be cautious as this process will take away the eReader warranty.
