Canonical to remove old Unity 7 Scopes as unsafe

Unity Scope

Will Cooke from Canonical has reported to the community that the company led by Mark Shuttleworth has plans to remove some old scopes that are no longer holding Ubuntu files because they are a security threat to the entire operating system. In this way, Ubuntu 17.04, a system whose launch will coincide with the sixth anniversary of the Unity graphical environment, will no longer have these Scopes installed or will be able to install.

At this time, the Ubuntu repositories still include some of these Scopes with security issues. Most of these Scopes are related to multimedia applications and include unity-scope-audacious, unity-scope-clementine, unity-scope-gmusicbrowser, unity-scope-guayadeque, unity-scope-music y unity-scope-gourmet.

Canonical will clean Scopes

Couple this with the decision to disable web searches by default and I think it's time to consider removing these Scopes from the archive. Plus, of course, the fact that they won't work in Unity 8 in the future anyway.

With this in mind, Canonical will remove the above and many other Scopes from the official repositories, unless their creators or those who should be in charge of them step up and correct any security issues existing. On the other hand, this software will not work in Unity 8, the next version of Canonical's graphical environment that will improve a lot with the release of Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus, although it will still not be an environment that we can trust 100%.

Personally, it seems to me a success that they forget about a software that, in my opinion, is not very useful and only serves to distract us, although I am sure that there will be users who do not know how to move or cannot live without them. And you? Are you among those of us who are happy about Canonical's plans to remove this software, or would you like to continue to be able to use it on Ubuntu?
