Open Source smart home platform receives Ubuntu Snap packages

Canonical has launched a Snap package mechanism for running Ubuntu applications on openHAB stack for smart homes. This Snap package management mechanism can run the openHAB powerhouse framework, allowing easier and more secure development when updating applications for Ubuntu. Last June, Canonical launched the secure Ubuntu Snap format for Snappy Ubuntu Core, a distribution for the Internet of Things or IoT, proposing it as open source or open source and as a universal package management solution for all Linux distributions.

According to Canonical, the technology triggers a one-click download and installation from the Ubuntu Appstore Link. Adding these snap packages to the smart home stack openHAB, developers are easier to create, test and distribute services for smart homes, something always important but even more so if we consider that we are talking about software that will be controlling our homes.

Snap packages reach smart homes

Snaps are confined, read-only, tamper-proof, digitally signed application images to ensure their integrity. Updated controls allow publishers and device vendors to validate updates across the ecosystem before they are applied. Snaps are also transactional, so faults are automatically reversed.

Azul Systems has also joined to the collaboration between Canonical and openHAB with the intention of packaging the Zulu Embedded Java Runtime with the openHAB packages. According to Canonical, thanks to this openHAB, which needs Java Runtime to be installed, can be packaged and distributed in a simpler way as an individual application without requiring more licenses.

All this makes us think that Canonical still thinks about being relevant in the internet of things. If we take into account the Apple ecosystem or how widespread Android is, I think it will be difficult, but if there is a company that wants to compete with Apple and Google, what better company than Canonical to try?
