In the beginning, using gadgets such as eReaders or Tablets was something that was limited to a small minority, however today this fact is obsolete. This makes some tasks that we performed like reading through pdf or Djvu files let's stop doing it to use epub as the default format when reading.
Entonces What do we do with all the old pdf files? En Ubuntu we can use tools like PdfMasher and even if we want, we can use Caliber, however the first tool is more complete for this task.
How to install PdfMasher
PdfMasher cannot be found in the official Ubuntu repositories, so the installation will have to be done through packages and the terminal. Even so, the process is simple: first we download the package with the wget command and then we install it with the dpkg command. We do it so:
wget -a https://launchpad.net/~hsoft/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+files/pdfmasher_0.7.4-1~quantal_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i pdfmasher_0.7.4-1 ~ quantal_all.deb
With this the installation of the program will begin and depending on the equipment, in a short time we will have it installed.
What does PdfMasher offer us?
Unlike other tools, PdfMasher allows us to personally modify the processes that exist until the final epub. That is, in the first process the program transforms the pdf file to format similar to html, this allows us to be able to modify and mark what we want as footer, headlines, indexes, etc…. Once we have marked all the parts of the document, we finish and the final Epub file will process the created document.
Opinion
Although it is still somewhat confusing and PdfMasher is a program without support, I think it is one of the most complete tools that exist, since currently there are tools like the Caliber converter that does not allow us to modify special parts of the document, which makes pdf's are impossible to convert. Now, PdfMasher is not incompatible with other tools so you can use everything It's the good thing about Free Software!
