Pingus, a Lemmings-style game to have a good time

about pingus

In the next article we are going to take a look at Pingus. This is a 2D puzzle game that is free and open source for Gnu / Linux, Windows and MacOS, which already has an age. During the game we are going to have to guide large groups of penguins through various obstacles and dangers, seeking their safety. This is a classic Lemmings-style puzzle game. It comes with a good handful of playable levels and it will also allow us to create our own levels using the built-in editor. The game is released under the GNU GPL license.

Pingus is a game created by Ingo Ruhnke and inspired by the popular game Lemmings. This version replaces the lemmings with Tux-like penguins. Its development began in 1998. All levels have a winter theme, full gameplay, as well as music and sound effects.

Pingus started with the simple goal of creating a free clone of Lemmings. Its creator offers everyone who may be interested everything he used to create this game. In all its years, this project grew well above the original goal and has become more than just a clone, as It has original illustrations, a built-in level editor, new actions, multiplayer option and some other features. The game exists only in the original English language.

game options

This game is based on a puzzle system. The objective to pursue is to guide a series of penguins from a starting point through a series of obstacles to an igloo. In each level there are a series of obstacles that the penguins must overcome. The player will see the game from a side view, and will not have any control over the movement of the penguins, but can only give orders such as build a bridge, dig or jump to the penguin that he decides. Depending on the level, the player can give one type or another of orders, but will have a limited number of them. When the player does not assign tasks to the penguins, they will keep walking forward.

Although Pingus is based on the idea of Lemmings, its creator indicates that it does not try to be an exact clone. In the game he included some ideas of his own such as the world map or the secret levels. These may be familiar from the Super Mario World games and other Nintendo games.

To get a better idea of the look and playability of Pingus, it is best to give it a try, consult the project website or on repository on GitHub.
