Pipelight or how to have Silverlight in Ubuntu

Pipelight or how to have Silverlight in Ubuntu

Like it or not, there are still some Microsoft technologies that are reluctant to be transported or brought into Canonical's system. A good example of this is Silverlight, Microsoft technology, that although it is in the process of being remodeled and from which Ubuntu users may benefit, there are applications that use this technology, with Netflix, one of the most used applications in the last year. For this reason, I consider it necessary to use Pipelight in our Ubuntu, since it helps us together with Wine to benefit from Silverlight in our Ubuntu.

How to install Pipelight on Ubuntu?

Pipelight It is not in our official repositories, therefore - as almost always - we need to use the Ubuntu console or terminal. So we open the terminal and write

sudo apt-add-repository ppa: ehoover / compholio
sudo apt-add-repository ppa: mqchael / pipelight-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pipelight

What these commands do is add to our repositories the package of Pipelight and installs it on our computer. Now we only have to install the Silverlight plugin for our system, you can find it at this link.

With all this Pipelight it should be working and Silverlight it would be running on our Ubuntu without any problem. But with all this we could not make use of Netflix or similar platforms, for this we would have to take one more step, but this time in our browser. If we use Firefox we will have to have the plugin installed  AU Control o User Agent Overrider and use one of the following agents:

Mozilla / 5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv: 15.0) Gecko / 20120427 Firefox / 15.0a1
Mozilla / 5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv: 22.0) Gecko / 20100101 Firefox / 22.0
Mozilla / 5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv: 23.0) Gecko / 20131011 Firefox / 23.0

If we use Chrome or Chromium, it will be enough to have installed User Agent Switcher and check the option of  WindowsFirefox, in the preferences.

With all this done and running, we will have operational Pipelight and everything that comes with it, although deep down, this application and system is still similar to Wine, what's more, it uses Wine algorithms and files, so if you have a problem with Pipelight, try install Wine.

As you can see, the use of Ubuntu has many advantages, among them being able to choose in which way to use services such as Netflix or new or already known technologies such as Silverlight. Although as I say, there are other ways to have Silverlight and Netflix, you just need to search.
