PiTiVi, install the flatpak package of this simple video editor

about Pitivi

In the next article we are going to take a look at PiTiVi. This is a open source non-linear video editor, released under the LGPL license. This program is being developed by Collabora Ltd. and its contributors.

This tool has been designed in order to have a simple but powerful video editor on our Gnu / Linux operating systems. PiTiVi has a simple interface from where we can add multiple effects. In addition, this tool gets its rendering, import and export capabilities from the GStreamer framework, and has basic editing capabilities, such as cutting, linking, joining and separating clips.

When choosing a program for edit and make our video compositionsSooner or later we will have to opt for one. Looking with this one that allows us to do what we want with the knowledge we have, which in many cases can be basic.

In Ubuntu we have at our disposal a lot of very good video editors. For instance OpenShot  It has a greater number of tools, and with it we can use a huge variety of transitions. This is something that will not give us such good results with the tool that this article occupies. In my case, what has given me problems with OpenShot have been the formats, which PiTiVi allowed me to solve.

PiTiVi lacked video effects, so the development team hired, I understand that in the Google Summer of Code, a student to allow users of this tool to add effects to the videos they are editing. Which was effectively achieved.

General characteristics

In the latest versions not only we will have access to more than 70 standard transitions and more than a hundred audio and video effects. We can add some dynamism to our videos by animating all the effect properties.

It allows us to create from a presentation to the insertion of subtitles in a video, going through the composition of images from cuts, sound substitution, etc. What's more, PiTiVi functionalities are expandable.

Other things to highlight about PiTiVi would be that it reaches us packed with time-saving features such as the ability to preview the trim in real time, rippling and editing, grouping and separating video clips, asset management in real time, and the ability to search the library. We will also have the option to zoom, it will give us the possibility of using modeless cutting, we will have removable interface components, the option of using smooth scrolling, automatic zoom adjustment.

PiTiVi project

This is a quite versatile program. The latest version released has been Pitivi 1.0, which has been marked as version 0.99. This latest version has many bug fixes and performance improvements over the previous ones.

We will be able to consult more characteristics of this project in its web page. We may also get help in the user manual that they offer us there.

Install Pitivi via Flatpak on Ubuntu

The creators of this application have created a flatpak repository so that Ubuntu users can easily install the latest version of Pitivi. We will only have to follow a few simple steps.

Yo I have tested this installation on both Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 17.04. To begin we will have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T). We will continue executing the following commands to install the flatpak daemon (if it is not installed by me). We will start by adding the repository PPA for flatpak typing:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexlarsson/flatpak

Once added we will install flatpak for Ubuntu and derivatives:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install --install-recommends flatpak

Now we can execute the command to install the PiTiVi flatpak package:

flatpak install --user http://flatpak.pitivi.org/pitivi.flatpakref

Once the installation is finished, we can start the video editor. We can either use the application launcher or do it through the command for the terminal:

flatpak run org.pitivi.Pitivi

Also, for update Pitivi's flatpak when a new version is available, we will just have to run the command:

flatpak --user update org.pitivi.Pitivi

We can install this program, but I think in an older version, from the Ubuntu Software center, and we can possibly find other methods to perform the installation.

Uninstall Flatpak

For uninstall PiTiVi flatpak, we will only have to execute the following command in the terminal:

flatpak --user uninstall org.pitivi.Pitivi stable
