Plasma 5.16.5, now available the fifth maintenance version with these novelties

plasma 5.16.5

It was scheduled for today and today it has arrived: KDE has released plasma 5.16.5, the fifth maintenance release in this series. This release also marks the end of the life cycle (EOL) of the Plasma 5.16 series, which means that there will be no more maintenance releases. As a version that is released mainly to correct errors, new features have been included, but not too important.

As usual, KDE has published two posts about the launch, one in which they announce it and another in which we can see the full news list. In the launch announcement page mentioned as a novelty only "FIXME", at least at the time of writing this article that have added new conditions in the weather (widget), that only notifications of the same origin are grouped or that the test of the speaker that did not show buttons on the volume control has been corrected. But we've also picked up a few updates that you posted in recent weeks from your KDE Usability & Productivity initiative. You have them below.

Plasma 5.16.5 highlights

  • The number within the notifications in the systray looks better.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause KRunner to display duplicate unit conversion results with a partially written second unit.
  • When music is playing and the screen locks, the disc art on the lock screen no longer compresses when it is not a perfect square.
  • Cuttlefish, System Preferences, Kdevelop, and Klipper apps no longer show twice in Discover and other software centers.
  • Network disconnection notifications no longer clutter the notification history.
  • Discover returns to showing reviews.

plasma 5.16.5 introduces a total of 42 changes. The next version of the graphical environment developed by KDE will already be a Plasma 5.17 that will be full of news, such as that the notifications icon in the system tray will become a bell, it will not show the total number of notifications and that it will vibrate when receive the first notification. Plasma v5.17 will arrive on October 15, just before the launch of Eoan Ermine, so it is ruled out that it will be included by default in the next version of Kubuntu. We can install it by adding the KDE Backports repository or if we use KDE neon.

Plasma 5.16.5 is coming to Discover as an update in the next few hours.
