Plasma 5.24.4 arrives with improvements for Wayland, KRunner and KWin, among others

plasma 5.24.4

As scheduled, the KDE project has released a new point update to its graphical environment this afternoon in Spain. This time it is Plasma 5.24.4, another maintenance release that has come after a third in which more bugs than expected were corrected. And it is that KDE, with Nate Graham in the lead, did not expect so many little things to appear to repair in a version of their desktop that at first seemed to have no cracks.

In Plasma 5.24.4, as in practically all previous updates, fixed a couple more bugs to improve the experience when using Wayland. One is for when used in a virtual machine, where sometimes mouse clicks would drift a bit. The next News list it is not the official one, but part of what Nate Graham publishes during the weekends. The official list is at this link.

Some new features of Plasma 5.24.4

  • In the Plasma Wayland session:
    • When the desktop grid effect has been entered with a four-finger swipe up, it can now be exited with a four-finger swipe down, and the animation is also a bit smoother.
    • When running the Plasma Wayland session on a VM, clicking something now makes the click actually go to the right place, instead of being slightly offset.
  • The “RGB Range” function is no longer sometimes confused and disabled.
  • Opening a new private window in Firefox using its Task Manager task context menu no longer sometimes opens the window with the HOME directory path in the URL field.
  • When using a global menu, closing the active app now clears the menu bar instead of leaving your menu there like a zombie.
  • Window title bar buttons now invert as expected when using the system with a right-to-left language.
  • KWin's blur effect no longer sometimes causes windows that use blurred backgrounds to flicker.
  • KRunner-powered searches are now case-insensitive when matching text on System Preferences pages, so they can be found more easily.
  • The multiple boot screens app in System Preferences now works.

Plasma 5.24.4 has been officially released, and it won't be long before it hits KDE neon or the KDE Backports repository. The rest of the distributions will have to wait more or less depending on their development model.
