How to install Plasmoids on a computer with a Plasma graphical environment

KDE Plasma 5.8.4 LTS

Whenever I have to write about this graphical environment I comment the same thing: Plasma it is one of the best graphical environments we have available on Linux. His image is very clean and attractive. On the other hand, it is highly customizable, which will allow us to install any application, applet or Plasmoid and modify practically all the sections of the operating system. In this post we will teach you how to install Plasmoids.

But before we start, what are Plasmoids? If we wanted to dissect the word itself, we would have a word composed of the word Plasma, the graphical environment we are talking about in this post, and the suffix -oid, which means "similar" or "shaped like." The actual definition would be something like widgets for Plasma or widgets that look good in Plasma. Having explained this, we will explain how to install these widgets in this famous graphical environment available in, for example, Kubuntu.

Installing Plasmoids from KDE-Look.org

If we do not want to search for Plasmoids on the web, perhaps the best method is this first:

  1. We right click on the desktop and select "Add Widgets ...".

Add Plasmoids to Plasma

  1. Next, in the Widget Explorer that will open, click on «Get New Widgets» and then on «Download New Plasma Widgets».

Add Plasmoids to Plasma

  1. We look for the Widget that interests us and click Install.

Add Plasmoids to Plasma

  1. Finally, we drag the Plasmoid that we have just installed to the desktop or a panel as we would do with any other widget.

Installing Plasmoids from a local file

  1. The first step will be the same as in the previous method: we click on the desktop and choose «Add Widgets».
  2. The second step will be similar to the previous method, but in the Widgets explorer, after clicking on «Get New Widgets» we will choose «Install from a local file ...».

Add Plasmoids to Plasma

  1. Next we will select the type of widget or Plasmoid to install:

Add Plasmoids to Plasma

  1. Finally, we choose the local file and click on "Finish".
