Pomatez, a simple pomodoro application

Pomatez is a timer for the Pomodoro technique

As I said many times, I am a fan of productivity techniques and the one known as Pomodoro is the one that has given me the most results.. In Linux we have several applications to implement it and today we are going to discuss one of the simplest.

The idea that alternating periods of work and rest is more useful than performing a task for several consecutive hours dates back to the late 19th century. with Taylor's work on productivity at work. However, its application to the productivity of individuals had to wait a hundred years.

What is the Pomodoro technique

The idea behind the Pomodoro technique, developed in the 80s by an Italian student, It is to divide the tasks that we have to do into periods of time of 25 minutes, which are called "pomodoros." This name comes from the fact that its creator began measuring them with a tomato-shaped kitchen timer.

To help maintain concentration, the periods are separated by short but frequent breaks.

Benefits of the technique

  • Better use of work time: By maintaining concentration for short intervals, it is not lost as when trying to do it for longer periods.
  • Higher productivity: By concentrating longer, more work is done.
  • Less stress:  By having more concentration and being more productive, work progresses faster.
  • Improves discipline: The Pomodoro technique forces you to set goals and plan work schedules.

Implementation of the technique

  1. Make a list of tasks to do, Experts recommend doing it the night before.
  2. Start with the first task list.
  3. Start the timer.
  4. While the timer is running focus on the task avoiding any type of distraction.
  5. Take a break of 5 minutes not doing any other task, you can take advantage of it to get up, drink water or some other activity not related to work.
  6. Repeat the cycle for 3 pomodoros further. At the end of the quarter the break is 15 minutes.
  7. Repeat the cycle of 4 pomodoros.
