QuiteRSS, a free open source RSS reader

about quiters

In the next article we are going to take a look at QuiteRSS. This is an open source feed reader that can be very useful to users, and it is also free and easy to use. All the user will need to do is take the URL of the feed and add it to the program to receive the latest posts from their favorite pages.

The program has most of the essential features any user expects to find in a standard desktop RSS reader. These include offline reading. This will allow us to download articles of our choice with one click, to be able to read them later. It must be said that we will have to add RSS feeds one by one in QuiteRSS. Although the good thing is that we will be able to import the list of sources in OPML file format and add a lot of RSS feeds at the same time.

General characteristics of QuiteRSS

Available options

  • QuiteRSS is a open source cross-platform RSS / Atom news feed reader.
  • We can use news filters as they are: new, unread, highlighted or deleted.
  • We will also be able to establish a automatic or manual proxy configuration.
  • It has an assistant import of feeds. It will give us the possibility of import / export feeds (OPML files).
  • We will be able bookmark news highlights. We can 'add a star' to articles or add labels to organize them better.

quiterss running

  • In the program we are going to find the possibility of establishing the automatic update.
  • It will also offer us the automatic cleaning when closing the program, using our own criteria.
  • Another feature available will be the power enable / disable images in news preview.
  • For a more comfortable viewing, the program will allow the user quickly hide the feed tree of feeds.
  • With this program we can also open the feed or news in a tab.
  • It has a quick search of news.
  • This program will notify us with a sound notification and pop-up notifications of the new news.

built-in web browser

  • Count with one integrated browser.
  • It will allow us to see a new or unread news counter in the tray icon.
  • We will be able to use keyboard shortcuts.
  • The program is multiplatform and is available in a good handful of languages.

These are just some of the features that this program offers to users. Considering it as a feature-rich cross-platform feed reader, all the listed features should come in handy at some point. They can consult all of them in the project website.

Install QuiteRSS on Ubuntu

QuiteRSS is available in the Ubuntu universe repository. This makes installation very easy. We will be able to install the program directly from the Ubuntu software option, or we can also choose to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and use the following command:

install quiterss from software option

sudo apt install quiterss

The above command may not install the latest version available. To make sure we install the latest version of the program, we can choose to add the official PPA:

add repository

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:quiterss/quiterss

After adding the repository and updating the list of available software, we can now install the latest available version of the program using in the same terminal the same command as before:

apt quiterss installation

sudo apt install quiterss

Once the installation is finished, we will be able to start the program by searching for the launcher that we will find on our computer.

pitcher quiterss

uninstall

Remove the program from our team it's as simple as typing in a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T):

uninstall quiterss

sudo apt remove quiterss; sudo apt autoremove

If you have used the repository for the installation, you can remove it with the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:quiterss/quiterss

Today in the Gnu / Linux world we can find many RSS readers, to keep up to date with the latest events around the world. QuiteRSS is a good solution as an alternative to web-based services like Feedly. To know more about QuiteRSS, users can consult the project website or on repository on GitHub.
