Raspberry Pi 2, Kernel 4.13, Virtual Box… Ubuntu Kernel team keeps working hard

Over the last week, the Ubuntu Kernel team has worked very hard to continue maintaining the Ubuntu kernel. Although it seems like a minimal or non-essential service, the truth is that kernel maintenance is a very important task within a distribution.

The kernel is responsible for the hardware support of our team. That is, if a certain graphics card is not supported by the kernel, the distribution will not be able to use it. Therefore, each kernel update is an important fact and something to use if we have problems with the version.

Today Ubuntu Kernel team is working on bringing kernel 4.13 to Ubuntu 17.10, for which they have until October 5, the date on which the version kernel will freeze.

Raspberry Pi 2 will have kernel version 4.12.5 thanks to the Ubuntu Kernel team

In parallel, the team has started work to bring the latest kernel, kernel 4.12 to Raspberry Pi 2, an SBC board that does not usually have much support from Canonical and Ubuntu. This kernel is expected to arrive later this week in the Ubuntu version for this SBC board.

But they are not the only work that is being done. These days it has also been optimized using Virtual Guest and AUFS in Ubuntu kernel, Virtual Box plugins for virtualization in Ubuntu. These optimizations will allow virtualization in our distribution to be optimized and we will not have problems when transferring files, running virtual machines or simply copy / paste between operating systems.

These are all important milestones, although certainly, the end user does not appreciate them or they are simply not aware of them. In any case, it is positive to have a team dedicated to the Linux kernel for Ubuntu Don't you think so?
