Scribus 1.6.0 released

The new version of Scribus brings great news

It is already the second day of the year and we have the first big update of one of the most emblematic titles of free software. On January 1, Scribus 1.6.0 was released, highly anticipated by those who are dedicated to design and love using Linux

I had already planned to include it on my list of the 24 essential applications for 2024 and, without a doubt, this new version makes me not regret my decision.

Scribus 1.6.0 released

Scribus is a program for creating publications. This includes both printed forms and those that remain in electronic form and require some type of interactivity such as PDF forms.

The recently released version It replaces both the latest stable version 1.4.8 and the development branch 1.5.

The developers recommend keeping previous versions of the program installed in case you have many documents created with them.

Features of the new version

  • Renewed interface with new icons.
  • Support for dark mode.
  • Manager of online resources such as dictionaries.
  • Better support for HI-DPL displays.
  • New features for the barcode creation module.
  • More commands for the scripting language.
  • Search for specific functions with indication of their location in the menu.
  • Support for Python3.
  • Mass movement of independent objects.
  • When you modify an object, its copies are automatically modified.

Other features in the experimental phase are the creation of cross-references and footnotes. Additionally, it is now possible to assign background colors to text.

Recorders

Scribus includes an image browser that allows you to assign labels or group them into collections. From there they can be dragged directly into the document.

In addition to supporting the use of shadows (Experimentally), this new version is compatible with all Adobe Illustrator and Xara Designer gradients, including mesh ones.

The new image cache allows you to work with large bitmap images without requiring too much RAM. You can also store them in their native format.

File import

Rewrote some document import filters and added new ones including.

  • RTF and DOCX Importers (Experimental)
  • Improvements to the PDF importer.
  • Import of documents in Krita's KRA format.
  • New document importer in Markdown format.

Additionally, added support for importing files from the following programs:

  • Adobe® InDesign® XML (IDML)
  • Adobe® InDesign® Snippets (IDMS)
  • Adobe® PageMaker® (P65, PMD)
  • Apple® iWorks® Pages
  • Microsoft® Publisher (PUB)
  • QuarkXPress® (XTG) Labels
  • VIVA® Designer XML
  • XARA® Page & Layout Designer (XAR).

Experimentally, you can import vector graphics from ZonerDraw® (versions 4 and 5) and QuarkXPress® documents (versions 3 and 4). It also works with Microsoft's alternatives to the PDF format: XPS (Windows Vista and 7) and OXPS (Windows 8 and later).

Work with vector graphics.

Scribus greatly improved compatibility with Adobe Illustrator, and in the case of hybrid graphics it allows you to select between the PDF version and the original format version. It now also supports illustrations and presentations created with LibreOffice. There is also no need to import the SVG files as they can be opened directly.

Other graphic formats that are now compatible with:

  • Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM)
  • Photoshop Custom Shapes (CSH)
  • Micrografx Draw (DRW)
  • Enhanced Metafile (EMF)
  • StarView Metafile (SVM)
  • WordPerfect® Graphics (WPG)
  • Xara® Designer (XAR).
  • Gimp XCF format (Requires installing additional software)

Other improvements

New color palettes added, totaling more than 300 in addition to improving the importer for those that are not included.

The program now supports export to PDF 1.6 with OpenType font embedding.

It can be exported in XPS format.

Except in the Windows version, a PDF based print engine can be used which will eventually replace PostScript.

To install it on Linux (Until the different distributions update the repositories) we can opt for the official version in format app image or the one from the FlatHub store.

We install the latter with:

flatpak install flathub net.scribus.Scribus

If you want to collaborate in the development, those from the new unstable 1.7 branch are also available
