Reminder: Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo will reach the end of its life cycle on January 23

Goodbye to Ubuntu 19.04

On April 18, 2019, Canonical He launched Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo. It was a non-LTS release that some liked better and others less, but it improved the work started in Ubuntu 18.10 by going back to GNOME. A non-LTS or Long Term Support release is supported for only 9 months (the 6 until the new release and 3 more to spare) and those nine months will end in less than two weeks.

The exact date of death of Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo will be the January 23. Thereafter, the version of Ubuntu released in April 2019 will no longer receive updates, packages, or security patches. With this in mind, it is worthwhile for "disco dog" users to upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine as soon as possible. This is something that can be done as we will explain below.

Upgrade from Ubuntu 19.04 to Ubuntu 19.10 now

To upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10 from 19.04 just open the software center and accept the new version. If this is not the case, we can do the following:

  1. We update all the packages with the following command (be careful with the last option that skips the confirmation):
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
  1. Next, we will write this other command:
sudo do-release-upgrade
  1. By typing the above command, Ubuntu will check for a new version, inform us, and offer to install it. If we say yes, we can only follow the instructions that will appear on the screen.

Updating we will be extending the support until JulyWhen Ubuntu 19.10 it will reach the end of its life cycle. If we update Focal Fossa again in April, we will extend the support until 2025, since 20.04 will be a Long Term Support version. Whichever option you choose, the time has come to say goodbye to the coolest dog in the history of operating systems.
