How to completely remove Unity 8 from Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus

Unity 8 does not

I am one of those users who were happy to read the news that the standard version of Ubuntu will be leaving Unity as of April 2018, but I have to admit that, before Mark Shuttleworth announced it, I was hopeful that Unity 8 will regain all the fluidity that was lost with the arrival of the first versions of Unity. In any case, now that we know its development is not going to continue, why keep it installed on Ubuntu 17.04?

There is no compelling reason to carry out the small steps that we will explain below with which we can eliminate the already abandoned next Ubuntu graphical environment, but since we are talking about an option that is of little use now and will not do any good -officially- in the future, in this post we will explain how to completely remove Unity 8 by Zesty Zapus, the latest version of Ubuntu that was released on April 13.

We are going to remove Unity 8

Considering that Unity 8 will stop at a very early stage, you don't have much to uninstall. We could say that we just have to remove the package from your graphical environment. I explain this because when installing / removing other environments we also have the option of installing packages with all the applications of the environment in question.

To remove the next version of Unity that will never see the light of official Zesty Zapus, we will open a terminal and write the next command ("-Y" is so that it does not ask for confirmation once the password is entered):

sudo apt purge unity8 ubuntu-system-settings -y && sudo apt autoremove -y

Once the process is finished, all we have to do is Restart the system. If we want everything to be automatic, we can add "reboot" to the command (without the quotes) at the end. When we start again, if we do not have any extra graphical environment installed -or programs like Kodi that offer us the option of starting only the player from the login- we will only have one option: Unity 7. And, incidentally, less Unnecessary packages installed in our Ubuntu.

What do you think of this? Have you removed Unity 8 from your computer or preferred to leave it to have a look at it from time to time?
