About Scribus

In this article we are going to see the Scribus tool. This is an open source application, very useful for creating post diagrams from the desktop of our operating system. I cannot comment on technical issues related to printing. As regards the needs of home users, it perfectly fulfills its mission.

It can be used Scribus to create magazines, newspapers, posters, calendars, brochures, etc ... In addition, it allows you to create pdf documents with advanced features such as forms, buttons, passwords and the best interaction with web technologies that we can get today.

A few years ago a colleague already told us about this application, you can see his article in the following link. But in this article we are going to take a look at the latest development of the Scribus application for electronic publishing (DTP). The application has already reached version 1.5.3 a few days ago. From its official PPA we can still download the previous version, which was 1.5.2. With the steps that we will see below, we will be able to install this program through a Third-party PPA.

Scribus 1.5.3 Features

Scribus newsletter template 1.5.3

Scribus newsletter template 1.5.3

In its new version this application has improved the text layout engine, which has been completely rewritten to give a better service. It now has support for about 500 languages. Writing on the canvas and rendering text in general increased dramatically in speed. The "Text" tab is now a separate user interface palette. Can you see her release note for more information about the new version.

Scribus is a free application that offers us a useful variety of tools with which we can develop and complete all kinds of projects. It also provides us with a good assortment of preloaded templates. The template options are varied and professional looking. Either to create brochures, business cards, newsletters, newsletters, PDF presentations or posters among others. Almost every option has multiple templates to choose from. Obviously it also gives us the option of creating your own document from scratch.

The interface is easy to handle. We just have to choose a template and start working. All the main tools you might need are efficiently organized at the top of the document window.

The application also comes with a ton of support options to help you get the best results from your work. If the help that the program itself provides us, there is a great community around Scribus that can guide you whether you are a beginner or a professional.

In general, this application offers us a fluid and efficient way to create all kinds of documents. It supports professional features such as CMYK color, spot color, separations, ICC color and robust commercial grade PDF among others.

Install Scribus 1.5.3 on Ubuntu

To install Scribus we first need to add the third party PPA. First we are going to open the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) or looking for "Terminal" from the application launcher. When it opens, we are going to run the command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/scribus

If we already have a previous scribus-ng (development release) package installed, we can update the software through the Software Updater after updating the repositories.

If we did not have the application installed, we can simply run the following commands one in the terminal to install scribus-ng 1.5.3:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install scribus-ng

Uninstall Scribus 1.5.3

To eliminate the development version it is necessary that we eliminate the url of the PPA from our list of repositories and then uninstall the application from our system. To do so, we just need to run the following command lines:

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:jonathonf/scribus
sudo apt remove scribus-ng scribus-ng-data && sudo apt autoremove

You can also remove the PPA and the program from the Software and Updates utility on the Other Software tab. All roads will lead us to the same destination, which is to uninstall any reference to this program from our system.

When you run the second command this appears:

E: The repository "http://ppa.launchpad.net/jonathonf/scribus/ubuntu zesty Release" has no release fitxer.
N: It is not possible to update a repository as it is securely, but it is disabled by default.
N: I looked at the apt-secure (8) man page for details on creating repositories and configuring users.

Well, the way I have published in the post is how I installed it on my computer and everything was installed correctly. Make sure you write the post commands correctly or try dividing the update and install into two separate commands. You can also try trying to install it with apt-get instead of apt.
Without having more information about your team, I can't help you.

It also happens to me like Ramon and he won't let me install the repository for the same reason.

Apart from having the dark theme in KDE, Scribus appears to me with the same theme and the icons look very bad. I don't know how to fix this without removing the general issue.

    Fuck!!!! UBUNLOG!!!

I'm up to the balls that you appear first in google, to install X application, and that your tutorial is useless because the repositories are OBSOLETE.

Let's see if YOU UPDATE YOUR FUCK TICKETS, it is not only about appearing first in google, but that your content is correct.

Hello. This article was written about three years ago. The PPA has been changed. Now you can install version 1.5.5 using the PPA:

      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:scribus/ppa

Sorry I can't be updating "all" entries.

      Salu2.
