About Selene

In the next article we are going to take a look at Selene Media Converter. This program is a open source media converter that has been between us for a long time. Recently the program has released a new version, which includes translation updates and updated installers.

In the Gnu / Linux world we have different multimedia converters, with similar characteristics to this program, but it is always good to try things other than the usual ones. Selene Media Converter will allow us convert audio and video files without any difficulty. This software is a state-of-the-art tool in terms of multimedia conversion. With it we can solve practically all the video / audio conversion needs that may arise.

This program is compatible with almost all multimedia file formats that we can use y can encode to the most popular output formats such as WAV / MP3 / AAC / FLAC / OPUS / MP4 / MKV / OGG / OGV / WEBM, etc. With this tool we can convert files to popular formats helping us, if you need it, powerful command line options for automated and unattended encoding.

General characteristics of Selene 17.7

This program will provide users with a clean, elegant and very easy to use graphical interface.

In this latest version, support for OPUS has been added in WEBM, MKV and OGG containers. It also supports added audio tags for Fraunhoffer AAC encoding. It supports almost all the input file formats that we can find (ffmpeg).

Our will allow to use VLC to play media instead of internal players. We will be able to center the screen and display the file name in the header bar.

We will be able encode the videos to the most common file formats like MKV, MP4, OGV and WEBM. We can also encode music to common audio formats like MP3, MP4, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, and WAV. Supports the encoding to latest formats such as H265 / HEVC, WEBM and OPUS.

Among the options to highlight we can find that we can pause and resume encoding at any time we want. We will also have the option to run in the background and turn off the PC after finishing the encoding. The program is going to give us a command line interface for unattended / automated coding. We can write Bash scripts to control the encoding process that we want to carry out.

Different translations have been added, among which we can find the Spanish translation. All other translations and installers have been updated.

In addition to supporting the most popular video and audio formats, Selene supports two types of presets: JSON presets (which determine the audio / video format, codec, bitrate, quality, etc.) and bash script presets which can be used to convert files using any command line utility.

Install Selene 17.7 on Ubuntu

To install Selene in our operating system we can choose between two options. The first will be to use the typical .deb or .run installer that we can download from your releases page.

The other option will allow us to install or update it if the software is already installed. To perform either of these two options we will only have to use the developer's PPA.

We will open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and execute the following command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:teejee2008/ppa

To install the media encoder for the first time in our Ubuntu operating system, we are going to execute the following series of commands that will check for updates and install the program. To do this, from the same terminal we are going to write the following:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install selene

If we already had the program installed, we can update old version simply by launching the Software Updater and installing the available updates from there.

Uninstall Selene 17.7

To remove the Selene media converter from our operating system, we will open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write the following command in it:

sudo apt remove --autoremove selene

To remove the repository from our local list we will have two options. The first will be to open the terminal and write in it:

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:teejee2008/ppa

The other option that we will have to eliminate the PPA repository will be through the Software & Udpates utility from the Other software tab.

I am not able to find the option so that when multiple folders are loaded to convert, in the output the folder structure is respected.
I do not know if it is my thing or is that the program does not have that facility.

I expected more, the default video converter is matruska, no one recognizes it, when you want to put mp4, you have to additionally install other plugins, when finishing installing, in the conversion it returns an error without any type of record of what it may be. A waste of time…
