Snapd 2.23 now available, includes support for GalliumOS and Linux Mint

Michael Vogt from Canonical's Snappy team announced the immediate availability of version 2.23 of the Snapd daemon which provides support for Snap packages on Ubuntu and other GNU / Linux distributions that have adopted Snappy. Be supposed to Snapd 2.23 is a major release that comes with new features, such as support for Gallium OS and the latest version of one of the most popular Ubuntu-based distributions, Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena", based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Thus, Snaps can now be installed on Linux Mint 18.1 and GalliumOS, as long as we have previously installed Snapd 2.23 or any future version. New features also include support for syscalls "Send *, recv *" on all interfaces, support for delivery in classic confinement, and a lot of UI improvements. As we have mentioned before, we are facing a major update of the software.

The snappy team is happy to announce the new snap 2.23 release! The new release is available in the snap "core" (and "ubuntu-core") in the channel "candidate" and also in the pockets "proposed" of Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04 and 16.10 and 17.04.

Other new features in Snapd 2.23

  • Moved the auto-refresh function within the daemon.
  • Updated the "snap info" command to also display contact information.
  • Now use xdelta3 from the snap kernel.
  • Now create a "current" symlink in the user's data directory.
  • Lots of new interfaces have been included, like unity8, linux-frame-buffer, classic-support, thumbnailer y network-setup-control.
  • Updated other interfaces, such as unity7, udisks2, core support, firewall-control, screen-inhibit-control, hardware-note, kernel-module-control, network-control, serial y default.
  • Various fixes.

As we can read in the words of Michael Vogt, Snapd 2.23 It is already available in the repositories «proposed» of Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, 16.10 and in those of Ubuntu 17.04, the next version of Ubuntu that will be released in just over a month and will be called Zesty Zapus.
