In the next article we are going to take a look at Standard Notes. This is a simple notes app available for most platforms. It focuses on simplicity and encrypts data locally. This means that no one will be able to read our notes except ourselves, or those we want to have access to them.

In Gnu / Linux today you can find numerous applications for take and manage notes. In fact, there are so many that the difficult thing is to choose one. Depending on the type of user you are and what you are looking for in these types of applications, it is likely that you have tried a large number and still have not found the one that best suits your needs. For this reason it is worth mentioning one more alternative like Standard Notes. This one may get your attention with its focus on privacy, simplicity and longevity. In an open project and in this way they want to guarantee that it does not depend only on its creators, but that it can exist indefinitely.

As I was saying, Standard Notes is a Simple open source note-taking app with end-to-end AES-256 encryption available for Windows, macOS and Gnu / Linux, Android, iOS and Web. The application is released under the AGPL-3.0 license. We can use this program for example to take personal notes, save our passwords, personal diary or as a record book.

The program offers two versions, one free and one paid. The free one offers the ability to automatically sync our notes between devices, offline access, password lock protection, tag support, and recovery of deleted notes. As indicated on the project website, only the password expert can decrypt the notes. The paid version, as always, will offer some other features.

Install Standard Notes on Ubuntu

We will be able to install the latest version of this note-taking application in Ubuntu through the AppImage file format and as a snap package.

Through Snap

To have this application we will have to open the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write the following install command:

sudo snap install standard-notes

This command will install version 3.3.1 of Standard Notes in Ubuntu. Then we can execute the following command to start the application:

We can also start the application by clicking «Show apps»In the Ubuntu Gnome Dock and write Standard Notes in the search box to click on the launcher that will appear.

Via AppImage

To use this program as AppImage we will have to go to the Standard Notes download link and download AppImage file from the project website.

Once the download is finished, we will have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and go to the directory in which we have saved the file. Then we will execute the following command to make it executable:

sudo chmod +x Standard-Notes-3.3.2.AppImage

We can also do this by right clicking on the downloaded .AppImage file and selecting "Properties”. Then we will have to go to the tab "Permissions"And check the option"Allow to run files as a program".

For run the program from the terminal we will only have to launch the following command:

./Standard-Notes-3.3.2.AppImage

We can also double-click the downloaded file to launch Standard Notes.
