Sylpheed, a lightweight email manager

Sylpheed, a lightweight email manager

A few days ago we talked to you about Evolution a task manager that not only included the possibility of managing our tasks but also of managing our mail and calendar. A very good program but one that is heavy and many do not use more than to see their mail. Before this there is a simple solution: look for a lightweight email manager. Searching for these terms, only one program comes to mind: Sylpheed.

Sylpheed is a mail manager, has a free software license and is very lightweight, possibly the lightest of its kind. It is currently in the Ubuntu repositories although we can also download and install it by hand. In addition to having a version for Gnu / Linux, Sylpheed It has a version for Windows.

Sylpheed Installation and Configuration

To install Sylpheed we just have to go to Ubuntu Software Center and search for the term Sylpheed. We select the program, since Sylpheed add-ons also appear and we will have it installed on our computer. Another way of installation is to open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get install sylpheed

A more classic and faster way than the previous one. Once we have installed the program, we run it for the first time and the wizard to configure the email account will appear

The first thing it will ask us is in which folder we want the mail to be stored. I personally have left the default option, but you can choose the one you want. I press the next button and another screen will appear Sylpheed, a lightweight email manager

in which it asks us to insert the type of account that we want to configure. They are generally of the POP3 type, although some such as Hotmail are of the IMAP type, in the options of your mail they will inform you of the type of mail that you have to mark. Once we have done it, click next and a screen will appear asking us for the account information, such as the name to be used, email address, etc….

Click next once we have done it and another screen will appear with the summary of the data entered, click next if it seems right and if not click Back to correct it. Finally the last screen appears in which it tells us that everything has gone well and that we press Finish. Now we have our fully functional email manager.

Many of you will already know Sylpheed for being or having used light distributions like Lubuntu o XubuntuHowever, it is not an exclusive application for these desktops, but it can also be used in other more powerful ones such as Unity. Finally, optionally, you can install the notifications application in the Software Center that will inform you when Sylpheed has new mail, it makes the program more fat but you still find it useful. You will tell me what you think of this manager, because at least it is worth trying it, don't you think?
