Terminology, a good terminal emulator with many features

In the next article we are going to take a look at Terminology. It's about a terminal emulator for Linux / BSD / UNIX systems fast and showy. This one is going to offer us a lot of great features by default that are easy to use.

How EFL uses (Enlightenment Foundation Libraries), Terminology works on X11, under Wayland and even directly in the framebuffer. Accessing the configuration panels will be very easy. Just click the right mouse button or hold down the left button for a couple of seconds to bring up the setup menu. From these panels we can modify the large number of options of this emulator.

Install Terminology Terminal Emulator

This terminal emulator we will find it available in the default Ubuntu repositories, but it is an outdated version. We may find that the videos, the images, the sound of the bell or the thumbnails, may not work correctly.

For install the latest stable version available, we have the option of use the official PPA. We will only have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write:

add repo terminology

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:niko2040/e19

Now we only have install Terminilogy with the command:

sudo apt update; sudo apt install enlightenment terminology

After the installation, we only have log out and log in again.

Configure Terminology

The configuration of this emulator is simple. There will be no more to do right-click anywhere in the Terminology window. We can also press the left mouse button for a couple of seconds to bring up the Settings menu on the right side of the window., as you can see in the following screenshot.

This configuration menu will show us some buttons with which we can perform the following tasks:

  • Open one new window terminal.
  • Copy paste texts.
  • Split the window terminal horizontally or vertically.
  • Open the settings to customize Terminology.
  • Get minivist of all the content of the terminal.
  • VIEW details about Terminology and its version.
  • Set a title for the terminal.

This emulator is fully customizable. Among other things, we will be able to; change the font, its size, the colors of the text, the themes, we will be able to establish a background image, set the transparency level of the background, we can consult or modify the keyboard shortcuts, modify the behavior of some functions, modify video playback settings, etc.

In this section we will be able to configure the behavior of the terminal when we perform certain actions like making the links active in the terminal, Gravatar integration, terminal effects, the ability to start Terminology at startup, etc.

Themes

For view or change the theme that the terminal usesYou just have to click on this option and select the one you like the most. In addition to those that are installed with Terminology, themes can be stored in ~ / .config / terminology / themes /.

Background

By default we will find three images available. If you don't like the default images, you can choose any other from the local disk. Just click on 'SelectPath'and select the location of the image you want to use.

In this option we will be able to configure the video engine to play them from the terminal.

From here we will be able set up a good handful of keybindings to perform different tasks In the terminal. All of them can be consulted on the GitHub page of the project.

Use of Terminology

Once installed we can start Terminology from Dash. We will be able to start use it as our vt100 terminal emulator normal with all the usual features such as 256 color support. It is designed to emulate Xterm.

While working with this emulator, in case of typing an incorrect command, we will see a red dot accompanied by a chime sound, in the lower right corner of the window.

This emulator comes with the following tool kit that will help us to carry out different operations from the command line, without having to install third-party applications, add-ons or extensions.

  • tyls → List the contents of the current directory with thumbnails.
  • tyalpha → Sets the level of background transparency.
  • tybg → Changes the background image of the terminal.
  • tycat → Show a media file or URL online.
  • typop → It will show a multimedia file or a URL in a browser window.
  • tyq → Queue of media files or URLs to be opened.
  • tysend → Send files. It can be useful via ssh.
