In this article we are going to take a look at the Texmaker editor. This is a free editor distributed under the GPL license with which we can write text documents. This is a program multi platform which also integrates many tools necessary to develop documents with LaTeX.

Texmaker is a clean, highly configurable LaTeX editor. It will allow users to use key keys and consult a great documentation. Texmaker is a LaTeX open source editor with viewer PDF integrated. This application has reached the new version 5.0.

This new version of Texmaker includes homework assistants, such as generating a new document or letter, among others. Install Texmaker 5.0 on Ubuntu 17.04

El official .deb file is only available for Ubuntu 17.04 (64-bit). From what they say on their website, this is due to the requirement of Qt5> = 5.7. To download the necessary package we will only have to go to the Texmaker website through the following link. In it you can select the necessary package.

After having the download at hand, we will have several options to install the package. The first will be to click install via Ubuntu Software. We could also use the Gdebi package manager. The last option will be to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and we will write the following command in it:

sudo dpkg -i ~/Descargas/texmaker_*.deb; sudo apt -f install

Texmaker configuration

In the documentation that they provide us in the website, advise all users to you need to configure Texmaker. Before compiling your first document, you must set the encoding used by the editor ("Configure Texmaker" -> "Editor" -> "Editor Font Encoding"). Next, you must use the same encoding in the preamble of TeX documents (example: \ usepackage [Latin] {inputenc}, if you use the "ISO-8859-1" encoding for the editor).

Note: when opening a file, it may be the case that the document cannot be decoded correctly with the default encoding. If this is the case, the program will allow us to choose another encoding (without modifying the default encoding).
