The best alternatives to Photoshop for Ubuntu

linux-penguin

Adobe is undoubtedly one of the best software suites out there, there will be those who comment otherwise, but they cannot deny that every tool that the adobe team offers us allows us to create great things, this time we will take Photoshop as a base.

Photoshop is a graphics editor rasterized mainly used for retouching photos and graphics, the application is quite popular and in demand. In our case, we cannot install this application on our system since it was not designed for Linux.

Alternative programs to Photoshop

Even though I can tell you that there are alternatives for it in Linux and quite good, do not despair if they are looking for the best option, the only thing they must take into account what is the need they really have and from there know how to choose which option is the best, from this point forget about finding something equal to Photoshop because it does not exist, although as I tell you these are the alternatives to it.

Chalk

about Krita

Kirta is based on the KDE platform libraries and included in Calligra Suite, without a doubt is one of the best open source image editorsBesides, for people who have been migrating from Photoshop, it has a fairly familiar interface to Photoshop.

In order to install this application in our system we do it with:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install krita

InkScape

Inkscape project screen

This application allows us to manipulate vectors, this is an application open source, you can create and edit complex diagrams, lines, graphs, logos, and illustrations, it is certainly an excellent alternative to PhotoshopAlthough its strength is the handling of vector images, it is still an excellent option.

To install Inkscape on the system we do it with:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable-daily

sudo apt update

sudo apt install inkscape

Gimp

gimp-2-9-6-

gimp-2-9-6-pass-through

It is a digital image manipulation application in bitmap form, both drawings and photographs. It is a free and free program, from my point of view is one of the main alternatives to Photoshop of open source that exist, besides that it is not limited to the scope of Linux, but we also have support for Windows as well.

To install it we do it with:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp

sudo apt update

sudo apt nstall gimp

vectr

vectr

Es a completely free and cross-platform vector image editor, this application was born before the problem of being able to have a manipulator of vector images, as well as their editing, on a low-resource computer. This seemed quite complicated, Vectr was born before it.

For its installation it is necessary to have the snap support in the system:

sudo apt-get update

sudo snap install vectr

mypaint

mypaint

It is one of the simplest tools that I list here, but it is still an option as it is an alternative, this program has the basic options for editing images,

To install it in the system we do it with:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:achadwick/mypaint-testing

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install mypaint

Pixlr

pixlr

This is not a native application made for some system, but It is an online tool with which we can manipulate images from the browser, in this part it is an excellent option that avoids us having to install an application on our system, although the only disadvantage is that it is necessary to have an Internet connection to be able to use it.

You can use it by accessing to this url.

Although there are some other tools, it is a fact that Photoshop has evolved over the years and has added new features, one of them is the handling of animations through sequences (Frames), which in some of these applications on the list does not count with that.

That is why I have avoided adding programs that focus on specific functions to this list.

If you think that I have lacked any other alternative that we can add, do not hesitate to share it with us.

Difficult to replace photoshop. It would be nice if wine in its future versions allows full PS compatibility

If there is someone who has been able to successfully use any of these programs at a professional level as a replacement for Photoshop, it would be very good to tell them in order to spread the word about Open Source.

Actually, that is the difficult part, that is, to use these programs in a professional and successful way, as Fernando points out. Greetings.

I am new my first comment and I switched to linux to change the same and it seems to me great only that photoshop renews 3d plugins and more but being paid I feel bad pirating it that is why I went to linux I think the linux community that They are pro instead of both they should do something better than photoshop would help other areas such as games and more with the office I do not know I do not handle the issue but I know of cases that complain but maybe it is different there is that is the only problem the Most of the people who are for the idea of something that is free of charge so as not to feel bad hacking and they find that the Linux operating system is great, you can customize so much and suddenly there is no such thing as phtoshop is not to believe

after time an alternative to photoshop called «Photopea» comes out with the same essence of photoshop, the only semi-disadvantage is that it is a web application, it is not native, and you must be partially online until it hosts enough cache so that it works, otherwise I have only seen complicated applications that seek an experience similar to photoshop, the detail is that the market was initially saturated with the adobe suite, and many are adapted to its mechanics in handling its interface, the most similar alternative possible is photopea and krita, the most horrendous of all is GIMP whoever knows how to handle it is that its learning curve was only in gimp, and for practical purposes of handling home or professional design applications it was with the adobe suite, the result is that the vast majority only used photoshop, the first to be found in the linux world is gimp and when trying to use gimp you end up hating it for its rough and non-existent photoshop interface dynamics.
