The doubt is cleared: Ubuntu Studio 20.04 will be an LTS version

Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS

There are currently eight official Ubuntu flavors. If nothing happens, it will soon be nine, since Ubuntu Cinnamon is working for it. Where there are more doubts is what will happen in the long-term future with its Studio version. Already there was a debate about whether they were going to stop being an official flavor months ago and now the question was whether Ubuntu Studio 20.04 it was going to be an LTS version. We already have an answer, although not a definitive one.

The answer they have given us in a entry on its official website is that yes, Ubuntu Studio 20.04 it will be an LTS version. They're not really sure about it, but that's the intention. If there is not an important change, Ubuntu Studio 20.04 will be supported for 3 or 5 years, something that we cannot detail better because, although the normal thing is that the LTS versions of Ubuntu are supported for 5 years, some of some flavor has been alone for 3 years and the future of Ubuntu Studio is uncertain.

Ubuntu 20.04 will be supported 5 years?

The doubts of the community are justified. As the same Ubuntu Studio team says, it is normal that we have them if Bionic Beaver, the latest LTS version of Ubuntu, was not in its Studio version. In addition, a year ago they were wondering if they were going to continue or not, so, all together, it forced us to be pessimistic and not believe that the next version would be supported for several years.

But Ubuntu Studio has been in charge of making one thing clear: doubts and symptoms of weakness are a thing of the past. If they weren't strong, there would have been no Ubuntu Studio 19.04, much less 19.10. Now they are stronger than ever, in part thanks to the leadership of Erich Eichmeyer, who allows them to choose specific Ubuntu Studio packages. Other developers like Ross Gammon or Thomas Ward are also helping.

The article published today has also served to announce that they will launch a new website (a redesign) and that Ubuntu Studio controls will be much better in 20.04 LTS, as well as adding some additional audio / instrument plugins. Although most of the changes will have to do with polishing what they released last October.

Do they really have a promising future?

As a user of Ubuntu Studio for a few months, I was not surprised that there was a debate on whether it should be an official flavor or not. Personally, I end up using a version whose design / functions I like and that doesn't have so much software installed, a lot of it I never used. That seemed to be the debate: do you really need a flavor that "only" differs from the packages installed by default? Although they say they are stronger than ever, the question, whether it should be an official flavor, continues to exist. At the moment the "yes" wins, a yes that most of the user community gives. Are you one of them?
